It looks like all that lurking around in the background has finally paid off and it’s the turn of Shit Robot to get some of that top LCD/EMI dollar thrown their way. With two years having elapsed since the release of Chasm, Marcus Lambkin is finally back with a new EP ‘Simple Things’ and this time people are starting to pay more attention.
Of course the fact that the EP has an absolutely sublime Todd Terje remix is one reason it’s been high on our wish lists for months now, but generally there’s the feeling that this year Lambkin will properly emerge from the shadow of his labelmates much like The Juan Maclean have done.
Anyway there’s still a couple of weeks to wait for the EP to drop (street date July 14th), so in the mean time sate yourself with this mix that the robot recently assembled.
Also playing that night were The Chap, who as you can see below were on top form as usual. Pretty good night all round really!
And that serves as a handy reminder that if you’re in London tonight and at a loose end we’re throwing a party with The Chap’s label Lo Recordings, and Parisian legends Tigersushi.
Come join us, Joakim, Krikor, DyE, James Rutledge, Gatto Fritto, Cursor Miner and mooooore at Corsica Studios, it should be incroyable.
Right I’m off to collect the Tigersushi crew from L’Eurostar, ooh la la!
LiLo Fornarina advert: This makes me want to BURN my Fornarina clothes if anything. Well done guys. You’ve made the WORST ADVERT EVER.
It’s like the inhabitants of the French West Coast mated with a Hilton daughter who gave birth to spawn that tried to re-make a Kavinsky video on cheap meth after failing to commission Kate Triangle Moross.
Speaking of Valerie, you may remember a time fondly called THE ’80′s. I was a bit young for that being born at the end of the glittering ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ era, (how ironic) and after the Monsieur Shiny Pants Tellier x American Apparel revival, I’m afraid to say it scared me a bit.
Anyhoos, we unanimously got over the neon garish electro phase I think or I’LL SHAKE YOUR OWN SHELLSUIT AT YOU and here we are in the throes of the borderline neo-disco bandwagon a la Little Boots/La Roux (same thing). You’ve probably heard Bulgari/Bogdan Irkuk’s remix of Sally Shapiro’s Miracle if you’re into all that disco nonsense which is assumed if you’re here taking a peep at the Slut. Some of his own ’80′s-ish stuff is rather snazzy too in a dirty, decadent Bulgarian way. Give it a try if you like vocoders, Breakbot-esque cricket intros and kinda shitty bass.
Not a good week to be an ill famous person it would seem. Whilst Jacko will no doubt hog the column inches and keep the internet’s photoshoppers busy well into next week, I also wanted to pour my virtual 40 out on the curb for Sky Saxon from the truly badass The Seeds who has also passed away this week though to much less fanfare.
Hopefully the next post will be slightly less death related.
Well it seems social networking sites are going into Jacko overload with violently opposed ad hoc camps springing up between those who thought he touched them deep inside as a child and those who thought he touched… well I’m sure you see where this is going.
Anyway as I’m already batting off requests for comment from the BBC and still need to get fitted for an ermine King of Pop robe, I wont have time to go into depth on my own feelings about the man here but I thought we should still mark this momentous pop moment in some way.
And what more fitting tribute is there than a mashup of Jackson and Zombie Nation made a few years ago by sonof before he ditched the bootlegs and took up the doom drone mantle as Regolith.
Proper Optimo end of night scorcher by all accounts…
Here the rather talented L Vis 1990 spares some time from artistic direction in the “Who’s There? conspiracy” to add some rubberband techno finesse to their track Xtatic Truth.
This is one of a gazillion remixes commissioned by Kitsune to cater for fans of all genres – even country rock*
This is the post where James Rutledge demonstrates how Michael Bay missed a trick in not casting freaky deaky Fever Ray in his second Transformer buster of blocks by bringing to the fore the robotic nuances of Karin’s voice over typical Rutledge noise.
Which also acts as convenient reminder of Saturday’s Glad 2 Know You party with new Rutledge project Vowels nestled snugly between Joakim LIVE (!!) and Krikor and a whole host of others.
In which Delorean perfect the Phoenix being given a dash of Baltimore House drums by DJ Technics sound to splendid effect – file under “One for the summer parties on apartment rooftops.”
Ever the fashion conscious types, they’re clearly going for a strong visual look to complement the music.
Take this press shot for example
Johan is putting himself forward as the archetypal Swedish Pimp Bear – bound to be popular down the Dalston Superstore, Etienne is cultivating an overly hirstute Gallic Vincent Gallo look quite nicely whilst Esau has got the Hackney furniture shopman goes poncho wearing blipster on lockdown
The current music industry obsession with throwing 10 remixes at every single release does make me despair sometimes.
Flicking through the pile of promos on the desk I have to wonder whether the world was made a better place by the nine remixes of Royksopp’s ‘Girl and The Robot’ or could all that time and energy have been better spent elsewhere.
Were we really worse off in the days when you had one version and if the label was feeling generous an extended 12″ mix? Maybe we should boycott the endless stream of remixes, re-edits and mash ups and just let tunes stand on their own tow feet.
Anyway there’s always someone ready to come along and spoil a good moan, take Chic’s – I Want Your Love. Pretty fucking untouchable as disco classics go, end of discussion.
Then along comes Moodymann and bang you have the awesome slice of disco house that is ‘I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits’.
Job done, we reiterate no more need be said. Except next up is Todd Terje with his edit of the track, ok he’s basically just extended it a bit, added some loops and filters, but it causes pandemoniom on the dancefloor and mixes into nearly any other track like a dream so we’ll give him a pass this time.
But seriously unless Blackout Crew wanted to stick a donk on it that really should have been the end of the matter.
So basically what I’m saying is that when another ‘I Want Your Love’ re-edit dropped onto the virtual mat the other week, it quickly sank down the inbox like a rotten whale. Which was stupid of me really as when I actually gave it a listen it was one of the best things I’d heard all week.
Looping that instantly recognisible opening bar our re-editor Bogdan has pulled off a neat trick, keeping it looped under he brings in some tropical drums, a fleck of inspired balearic guitar and before you know it you’re hard pressed to remember it’s a re-edit at all.
In fact the only bit that jars is when the track kicks in properly, the hypnotic opening section is so good I could happily just have seen that bit extended and built upon for a good 5-6 minutes alone.
If you like the sound of that then you’re in luck as Bogdan was DJ’ing alongside In Flagranti the other week and some bright spark recorded his (own) edit heavy set which you can pick up from here.
I’d like to also add that regardless of what I said at the start of this post, Slutty Fringe are available for any remix requests…
Astronomer is alias of London Producer and DJ ********* ****
Watch out for forthcoming Astronomer remixes of rising stars of the music scene in The XX and Clouded Vision, whose track Neon Rain has also been given a nice smacked out disco refix by Glaswegian The Niallist
Here is Astronomer remix of Lips by Micachu which defies genre stapling much like the original track.
My Last Days co-promoter and master of ceremonies at Proud on Saturdays David H has been a bit cunning and started recording all the sets from the weekly Be parties.
Whilst in theory this is good for me as it means I might actually get round to recording some mixes, it’s definitely good for you as we should soon have a nice steady flow of fresh club sets from decent DJs such as last week’s guest Munk, to stick on your pods.
Kicking things off though is a warm up set from the boss man himself, let this ease you into the weekend. For those in the Camden area on Saturday, playign at Be this weekend will be Chester French, The Sunbirds and we will be doing a Last Days of Disco DJ set, email them or hit up the facebook page for cheap entry.
