Love To Love You Baby

29.10.09

Poor old Florence, first everyone tells her to clear a space on her mantelpiece for the Mercury award and Speech Debelle swipes it from under her nose, and then she suffers the indignity of getting a rather amusing old fashioned kicking from the Quietus.

Still at least she can take solace in the fact that her label keeps coming up with the goods when it comes to picking remixers with the likes of Leo Zero and Optimo adding their quality stamp to her last few singles.

This time it’s Jamie xx at the controls, who takes time out from having smoke blown up his ass by every music critic around to knock out a rather lush remix of Florence’s cover of generally tiresome single woman’s anthem ‘You’ve Got The Love’.

Nice video too, even if the first time I watched it it froze around 0.40 and for one terrifying moment it looked like she was about to turn to camera and bellow ‘RICKAAAY’.

Extra Connection

29.10.09

A early taster of what to expect from Caroline True Records forthcoming Manicured Noise Remixed EP in which the somewhat legendary Mancunian punk funk outfit are treated to contemporary reimaginations by Hacienda mainstay Jon Da Silva, the mighty Flagrant Fowl duo of Cousin Cole & Pocketknife and young upstarts Wedderkopp and Taylor.

We present a special edit of Cousin Cole’s take on Metronome which has been killling it in Brooklyn warehouse parties for a minute.

Manicured Noise – Metronome (Cousin Cole Remix 2-5)

The full EP drops November 30th at all the digital suspects.

Blue Steel In The Hour Of Chaos

29.10.09

Just in, the video (directed by Körner Union)  for Cosmo Vitelli’s new Bot’Ox single. A strangely beautiful promo for quite a lovely melancholy track which for some reason has  me daydreaming about what it would be like to drown in a swimming pool filled with candy floss.

Now there’s a cheery thought for you.

The EP is out on Nov 9th on Cosmo’s I’m A Cliche label.

Slutty Fringe Conker Tournament 20.10.09

28.10.09

IMG_1954

We came, we saw, we conkered. Last Tuesday we took over the roof of The Queen of Hoxton for the first annual Slutty Fringe Conker Tournament and despite it being pretty much the chaotic shambles that we were expecting it was also a stupidly fun night out.

After several rounds of hardcore conkering the eventual winner was one Mr Graeme Ross, you can see his smug visage framed by his champions necklace in the pictures below.

Most of the pictures were taken by the talented Mr Medwell, but as he had to shoot off to snap No Age’s secret gig for the NME, we took a couple ourselves. I’m sure you’ll be able to work out which…

Special thanks to Havana Cultura, Mien Tay and Lipstickandlaceboutique.com for supplying the prizes and the wonderful David and Krista at The Neon Hub for all their help. Now you better start getting in training for next year, as we’ll be back bigger and better.

No Age 19.10.09

28.10.09

IMG_1757

Noisy hardcore tykes No Age were over from LA last week to tear the Scala a new hole and by all accounts their mission was accomplished.

Our legendary band paparazzo Tom Medwell caught them in action, though as I actually spent that evening drilling holes in 150 conkers (yes ladies, that’s how I roll) those looking for some words on the night should probably cast their eyes in the direction of The Line of Best Fit.

Raving Patterns

26.10.09

In which sometime Dissident dude Neo Filigrante earns further edit stripes with this suitably phased out retouch of Cappuccino’s Hell Dance With Me, a slice of early 80s disco that remains a firm favourite of disco beards like Harvey and Daniel Wang.

Tell Me That I’m Dreaming

26.10.09

A cursorary glance at our Events page will uncover the fact us Slutty Fringe DJs have been invited to Shattered Satellite’s event this Friday in East London and will be covering the Arthur Russel inspired dots between bands (or at least dropping some new In Flagranti and Ze Records edits) along with the charming Jamila from Fucking Dance.

Playing live and headlining are the (aforementioned on here) and very exciting Django Django with support in the shape of the Art School Hercules & Love Affair swagger that is ColouringIN (what Tom Neville does some of the time he’s no Retro/Grading it up with Serge) and the deceptively blokeish named Al Cool who may or may not be behind the nights festivities.

For those unfamiliar with ColouringIN here’s some tracks that I some PR devil must have sent me.

Paint It Yellow

26.10.09

the_national_womens

I own too many t-shirts, considering that they generally all look shit on me and I normally wear shirts anyway you’d think I’d be able to resist temptation but no I’m a sucker for a nice design on a bit of cloth.

Still at least with Yellow Bird‘s Tees, I can take some solace in the fact that tomorrow’s dusters will have generated some cash for a good cause or two. Featuring design from a whole host of ‘indie’ bands such as Au Revoir Simone, Of Montreal and Devendra Banhart, each t-shirt benefits a different charity ranging from New York’s Safe Space to old faithfuls like Greenpeace.

Currently I’m torn between The National’s (pictured above) and Little Boots‘ effort, though to be honest I think it’s probably the remarkably gamine young lass modelling Ms Hesketh’s one that is interfering with my judgement here rather than any particular aesthetic merits of her design.

1st Official Slutty Fringe Mix

26.10.09

apr51

I just did a mix for the Are People Real podcast which as the title suggests can be considered the first official Slutty Fringe DJ mix ever (mixtapes for ex gf’s that crudely slap PJ Harvey over a bumping house beat do not count)

Eschewing the temptation to come across all LA Friendly on your ass with the upfront bangage, this mix is more a selection of tracks from this year that I have enjoyed and sound good next to each other.

It is now live on the internets! Click on the above image or this word to listen / subscribe via the iTunes. Tracklisting for show after le bump.

10th Birthday

23.10.09

P8150057Happy birthday Mister Fabric

Ten years is a helluva long time for a club to be running and you can see why it’s prevailed from the massacre that was last weekend over at Charterhouse Street.

With an epic four day celebration, I honestly feel for the cleaners on Monday afternoon. The dubstep/electro crossover thurs/fri nights were followed by an intense techno weekend onslaught with a line-up of the biggest names from Steve Bug, Kompakt’s Michael Mayer to the pretty buff Ivan Smagghe, Konrad Black, Rub N Tug and Swayzak to residents Craig Richards and Terry Francis. Though Kenny Larkin cancelled (leaving a delightful birthday message for all), Pete Herbert took to the decks with his usual disco house whilst Berlin’s Mathew Jonson (via trippy techno) and Daniel Bell were on full form.

Experiencing what must have been a billion hours of Villalobos, the sweaty (yes legendary, but also sweaty) man started with a pretty progressively dark Berlin techno set (possibly and probably off his face) merging with 90s techno rave. Rising to the occasion, we leapt onstage for some oh-so-casual dancing before jiggling on up to the camp disco room aka Room 3, where we witnessed enough legal poppers and Renaissance era outfits to freak us the hell out.

Almost having been trapped in the labyrinthine underground at 10am, it’s impossible to say how many hours were spent deciding whether to set up camp in there for good. The incessant light of day disturbed me enough to get my mind off not being able to feel my legs, whilst I got all sad that entering a dark pit of techno at such hours really isn’t commonplace enough… but I guess I’ll have to wait till next year.
