Can’t Juke Without Me

16.10.09

Dre$$ 2 $weat, the much loved Glasgow based label, whose excellent name was matched by a superlative  musical policy and artwork is winding down and merging with fellow weegie labels Wireblock and Stuff Records to form the Numbers imprint – More Info in garish details on the site.

Sad news but D2S depart with a bang – that bang being the Night Slugs EP from our buddies Alex Bok Bok and L Vis 1990 which finally got released a few weeks back and is quite the rowdy joy – cop it at Boomkat.

Accompanying the release was a Best of Dre$$ 2 $weat mix compiled by big cheese Jackmaster which charts the labels progression from the Bmore of Rod Lee through hybrid ghetto house to bassline and other such noise all mixed with the ‘Jack’ man’s trademark 1 take style.

This mix is now available for download

The Body Electric

15.10.09

7seal

So I was in bus blighted 93 Feet East on Monday at a  friend’s night, and amongst the many, many records he played by bands that I really should already know about, one stood out, a track by New Yorkers  Silk Flowers.

Now maybe the teen goth in me never really got ‘closure’, my acid house e-piphany came on (up?) so fast but damn I liked what I was hearing, ice cold synths, a bare skeletal drum machine that seemed to be just a beat out of time and vocals pitched (literally) somewhere between Ian Curtis and Andrew Eldritch.

Even better now that I’m a proper grown up and spend my evenings slumped on the sofa playing the Xbox rather than writing piss poor poetry about ‘THE DARKNESS WITHIN’ (translation my teenage inability to get laid), I can appreciate it without feeling the need to wear ridiculous winkle pickers and troublingly tight leather trousers, a definite bonus.

Like the sound of that, then get your gloom on to this track off their recent self titled debut album.

Silk Flowers – Costume

The Brooklyn three-piece are touring Europe in November, I’ll be at The Luminaire covered in homepride.

Nov 5 – London – The Luminaire w/ Thank You, Grouper
Nov 6 – Nottingham – Chameleon
Nov 7 – Dublin -The Joinery Gallery
Nov 8 – Belfast – The Menagerie
Nov 10 – Berlin – Festaal Kreuzberg with Six Organs of Admittance
Nov 11 – Copenhagen – Lades
Nov 12 -  London – Barden’s Boudoir with The Present

Some People Think We’re Conkers

15.10.09

Slutty_Conker_420

Next Tuesday we will be hosting the First Annual Slutty Fringe Conker Tournament, high above East London on the roof of the Queen of Hoxton. We’re not ones for hyperbole here but I think it’s fair to say that this date will go down in history.

Indeed in a hundred years when this event is bigger than the Olympics and World Cup combined and your cloned grandchildren are desperately trying to find the final silver foil hologram for their Pannini World Conker Cup collection, will they be able to look back with pride and say my DNA was there at the start? Only if you enter will they…

And if competing for honour and pride isn’t enough we also have some rather great prizes for the winners that includes male and female clothing from new website Lipstickandlaceboutique.com, signed copies of Gilles Peterson’s October release Havana Cultura and a meal for 4 at just opened Mien Tay in Battersea.

Think you’ve got what it takes to be the best? Get a team of three people together, drop us a line and reserve your place.

If you’d just like to enter solo, still drop us a line, as if there’s enough of you singletons out there we’ll try and do something just for you, or maybe just set up a dating agency.

Wolf and Lamb Interview

14.10.09

09.9.19CaMichigan 056

In the midst of running their sex-tech New York label Wolf + Lamb with releases from Seth Troxler and Soul Clap to Jamie Jones,  Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi speak to Slutty Fringe about their T-Bar clubbing and the sultry house sound they’ve been perfecting…

Slutty Fringe: Who’s the Wolf and who’s the Lamb?
Wolf + Lamb: It seems to change actually, though technically Zev means a wolf and Gadi, a lamb in Hebrew, when we figured that our we promptly took up that moniker.

SF: Wolf + Lamb seems particularly deep and soulful compared to other current electronic labels, do you see a future for the label of shifting towards anything harder or does it depend on the artists you find?
W+L: We’ve actually made our way from harder stuff to where we are now. The artists on our label are pretty much set for now, and everyone’s quite excited to be exploring the slower, sexier side of the the electronic scene. There are enough labels putting out harder stuff, some of it definitely exciting but we’re really loving playing to the slower side right now. High energy, but definitely slower than the current trends.

SF: Do you think you strive for a particularly Brooklyn-influenced sound, or is where you’re based irrelevant?
W+L: Most the kids in Williamsburg [Brooklyn] are making and listening to indie rock. New York has everything, jazz, house, hip hop, rock.. being from New York means that you’re always around every kind of music and the potential of being influenced by them. We don’t really strive for any particular sound, the direction is all the label artists responding to life and the times we’re in.

SF: You’ve cited Moodymann as an influence/recommendation… any involvements with the man since you’ve started? Is quite as he Moody as he lets on?
W+L: We’re just big fans of the weirdness; his mixing of classic house sounds with future unpredictability, and the looseness.

SF: Is this a temporary residency you have at T Bar or is it something ongoing with Kubicle?
W+L: We love playing in London, we’re close with the people from T-Bar and Kubicle. It was the first time we played or even were in London and really felt at home.

SF: What do you think of the London club scene?
W+L: I think it’s the best we’ve seen so far, definitely for us, our artists, and the style we’re playing. We’re connecting to people better than anywhere else outside of New York.

The Last Chance

13.10.09

Musical genius, and of course ‘Entertainist’, Gonzales has announced he will be playing 4 dates in London this November, every Wednesday night at La Pigalle.

Billed as a ‘piano talk show‘ each night will see the Guiness World Record holding pianist joined by special guests such as Jarvis Cocker, Akira the Don and the Cocknballkid.

Probably one of the only musicians I’d actually want to see 4 times in the space of a month, these shows should be pretty special. Tickets are on sale now.

Check out the video above for a typically Gonzales-esque explanation behind the shows…
