redsnapper

When you get to my advanced years there are few things in life you tend to do for the first time, but this year after more than a decade and a half of somehow missing them I finally got to see Red Snapper play live.

Bursting onto the scene back in the halcyon days of the mid nineties, the Snapper, ostensibly a punk-jazz band, were a curious propostition considering most of us were pilled up to the gills on double dipped doves and making little box, big box shapes on top of speaker stacks at the time.

But through a combination of old Lord Sabre’s patronage, epic drum and double bass live sets and a series of critically acclaimed albums on Warp, it’s fair to say that Red Snapper soon had the techno fan’s favourite jazz band slot sewn up and I along with many others was right gutted when they split in 2002.

Thankfully after a lengthy hiatus they reformed in 2007, and this year has seen them once again back in the spotlight with the excellent A Pale Blue Dot album out on Lo Recordings getting the critics all excited and crowds once again marvelling at the noise that three blokes with just a double bass, guitar and drums between them can make.

To celebrate this renaissence of all things Snapper, sticksman Rich Thair (as handy on the decks as he is behind the drums) put together this mix for us to give to you. Featuring all the recent mixes from the Chris Smith EP plus a load of unreleased material, this is just the ticket for those looking for something a bit different to kick start the week.

Download: Rich Thair – Red Snapper Mix – Nov 09

1. Danger Global Warming – Red Snapper Remix
2. Robert Logan – Accurate Spit Boy – Red Snapper Remix
3. Red Snapper – Moving Mountain – The Waldorf And Statler Trio – Move Any Mountain Remix
4. Red Snapper – Moving Mountain – Scuba Remix
5. Red Snapper – Deathroll – Robert Logan Remix
6. Red Snapper – Brickred – Dr.Radius’ Brick Dub
7. Red Snapper – Lagos Creepers – Memory 9 Remix
8. Moist – I Am – Red Snapper Remix

Talking of seeing the band play live, as you can see below Red Snapper have a few dates coming up, any of which I would heartily recommend you attend. But if you’re in London this week then let us make the decision even easier by giving the first person to email us here, a pair of tickets to the show at Koko where the band will be going head to head with The Bays.

5th December – London, Camden Koko
12th December – Oslo, Jazz festival
18th December – Thessaloniki, Mylos Stage
19th Decmeber – Athens, Rodeo
20th December – Athens, Rodeo
19th Fenruary – Istanbul

Tired Of Waiting

Whereas the remixes for Audacity Of Huge were indelibly marked with a underwhelming stamp, Cruel Intentions, their collaboration with Beth Ditto has been taken apart and put back together with superlative results by Mo Fulton (our fave), Greg Wilson, Heartbreak and Joker.

Should you prefer acid soaked efforts look no further than this one by DJ Pierre which has become a staple of the SMD live set.

Off Modern 10

Off Modern 10

Thorough family friends Off Modern have reached round 10 in party history and this time round they’ve recruited up the Plugs, Acres Acres, Jam City, and Joe Howden for a party spectacular. Along with all of that there’s the usual Off Modern residents Tomfoolery vs Nasty McQuaid and some live art from Hounds of Hate.

Get down south, get your drunk on and try and hide from the Vice paparazzi (or not).

For more information check out their little Facebook event page here, or their website here.

Gathering Dust

Occupying the corner of musical delight in my head crudely daubed Noisey Girl Pop in permanent marker, which was previously kept warm and fuzzy by Pens, are Wet Dog.

Plans to see Wet Dog in action last Friday at Islington indie dive The Lexington were kiboshed by the extensive selection of bourbon on offer downstairs.

Sorry Wet Dog.

Wet Dog’s new album ‘FRAUHAUS!, out next week on the always sweet Angular Recordings, is a worthy purchase for fellow fans of the Noisey Girl Pop movement.

Currently getting much love from me, myself and I is the amazing Astronomer remix of Othello Woolf‘s Stand. If you too would like to love it (and you should/will) you’ll find it on the b-side of his new single on the tip-top Young & Lost Club.

Those in search of instant gratification should look below, where you will find another remix this time by Golden Silvers, who drags Woolf’s gospel vocals through some damn muddy funk.

Call Me Ishmael

whale meat NOAA

Whilst jaunty folk pop types Noah and the Whale wait for someone to hand back their instruments, their label have handed latest single ‘Love of an Orchestra’ over to a trio of remixers to mess around with to their hearts content.

The ubiquitous Gold Panda makes it sound like a chorus of angels trapped inside a busted old radio, Max Tundra turns in an elasticated leftfield pop banger and Nightwaves remix is tinged with slippery bliss, regret and sadness, kind of like the aftermath of really great sex with your girlfriend’s best mate.

All great and all available to grab below.

Workerman have blown me away this week. Firstly they hit out with some really crisp print and aparel design, then to top it off they threw their handlebar and bike design at me. Check out more from the brilliant Workerman here.

Some Say Prayers

possibility

Whilst downing cheap as chips Sam Smith pints on Wednesday waiting for the Gonzales gig I formed a new band snappily titled ..VON.. essentially me on my old Roland Groovebox playing cold wave covers of Sisters of Mercy tunes.

Anyway assuming that this ends up like 99% of my drunken schemes and is never spoken of again (see also running the London Marathon, becoming a blacksmith, taking up boxing, giving up club promotion etc etc etc), then you’ll need something to fill the anticipatory void that my opening paragraph created.

Luckily Tom Furse from moptopped gloomsters The Horrors has stepped into the breach with this remix of Project: KOMAKINO‘s ‘Syndrome’, just the ticket for when the only option life gives you is to thrust your cheek bones into the wind and look all moody.

Project: KOMAKINO – Syndrome (Tom Furse (from The Horrors) Remix)

Project: KOMAKINO’s debut album will be creeping into your lives soon on the new Desire label.

I Want To See All My Friends At Once

Arthur Russell Press temp

It’s fair to say that despite being long, long dead, Arthur Russell is just ‘so hot right now’, with everyone from devoted disco beards to questionable art students staking a claim to his disco/folk/avant pop/classical mantle.

Currently doing their best to burnish his reputation rather than ride on his fraying coat tails are Electric Minds whose new compilation ‘Go Bang!’ is as fine a tribute to the big man as to have surfaced in recent years.

Featuring an allstar line-up of some of our favourite producers/bands (My Tiger My Timing, Pocketknife, Max Essa and Yam Who?) reinterpreting tracks like ‘Wax The Van’, ‘Go Bang!’ and ‘Tiger Stripes’ it’ a great compilation and one well worth adding to your shopping basket at the first opportunity.

Pocketknife + Joe Worricker – Get Around To It (Ray Burst Remix)

Electric Minds & Lovebox Album Launch PartyTo launch the album Electric Minds are joining forces with Lovebox for a ridiculously large party at the (Relentless) Garage on November 27th.

On the night you’ll find many of the artists mentioned above playing in the fine company of people like Maurice Fulton, Bill Brewster, and Severino plus a screening of Matt Wolf’s acclaimed AR biopic ‘Wild Combination‘. Big pats on the back to everyone involved on this one.

Tickets are available now from Resident Advisor.

Get Your Whistle Wet

18.11.09

For the most contemporary example of what happens when visual media collides with musical expression look no further than Sport Hit Paradise.

Up and coming illustration talent Elizabeth Arkhipoff asked a clutch of excellent musicians such as Munk, Discodeine, In Flagranti and Gavin Russom to record a track for her imaginary band Sport Hit Paradise, providing the general direction as well as song title and also came up with some original art to accompany each track.

This art will be shown at Arkhipoff’s forthcoming exhibit at Paris art space 12 Mail from December through to February next year and some 300 copies of the musical results have been pressed up on CD to give away.

The nice people at D*I*R*T*Y / 12 Mail have cocked a snoot at the elitist norm of high art though, and offered all tracks to spread across the internet.

Some are better than others and you’ll find the better ones here. Full details of gallery run after the drop.

Effortlessly bridging the gap between the Dalston disco and the wedding disco are the Soul Clap Pop Edits available only on the ever excellent Wolf & Lamb in which the Boston duo take on a much covered Fleetwood Mac favourite and the only Chris Isaac song I know.
