If  the book A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore got scheduled for transmogrification into a Hollywood comedy, we’d definitely become film agents and make sure Tobi O’kandi, the towering O Children frontman, got an audition for the role of Minty Fresh, the 7 foot tall mint green velvet suit wearing sexually ambiguous record shop owner cum Death Merchant.

Till then we’ll continue with this blog lark and Tobi will carry on fronting a band that expertly plunder a sound  not dissimilar to a zombified Johnny Cash rising from beyond the grave to replace Farris as singer for The Horrors.

The new O Children single Ruins being a perfect example of this sound

Slutty Fringe Mix Series: The Deadstock 33

31.03.10

Well we don’t like to brag but if you follow Rory Phillips‘ tweets you’ll have seen that barely 2 days after his mix went up on Slutty Fringe he was partying in Miami with P Diddy. Now I’m not saying the two are directly related but well it makes you think doesn’t it.

Right with no further delay onto number 3 in our series and this time it is the turn of The Deadstock 33s, the latest nom de disque of veteran DJ/producer/immaculately tailored chap about town Justin Robertson.

From his days dancing to acid house on the floor of The Hacienda, right through his residencies at seminal clubnights like Spice and the Rebellious Jukebox Club, releases as Lionrock and Revtone, eccentic Top of the Pops appearances epic, and legenedary sets at clubs like Bugged Out, Justin has been a key figure throughout the past two decades of dance music.

And now his crowning achievement, immortality on these very pages.

Describing his Deadstock 33s releases as psych-house, the mix below is an exceptional trawl through the outer regions of psychedelic disco, just perfect for BBQs, acid fuelled freak outs and late night sex jams.

We caught up with Justin to see where his head is currently at…

Hi Justin, how are you doing this fckn freezing morning?

Very happy pressing buttons in my studio, dreaming of summer

Deadstock 33s is quite a unique name – is there some signifigance to it? do you play all your disco 45s at 33 for that extra spacey sound?

Now thats a good idea, kinda disco new beat vibe! Its named after a particular edition of vintage levis!

Can you give a little description of what to expect in your mix?

The Deadstock 33s vibe is all about galactic disco, quite psychedelic, trippy disco I guess, with a Balearic cap worn at a jaunty angle !

As well as last years awesome Drifting On A Wave EP you’ve done quite a few remixes of impressive artists such as In Flagranti and Erol & Alex of late, what else can we expect from Deadstock 33s?

It’s going to be an exciting year, I have an album ready for later this year called “Underneath The Pines”, singles for Is It Balearic and Paper as well as some psych-disco EPs on my new Solitary Cyclist label!

I’ve also just done remixes for The Ghost on Sunday Best, and for Argentine band Poncho featuring Karen O, also working on some re-edits for Tronik youth’s new edits label, so keeping busy!

Jockey Slut used to call you the best dressed man in dance music and your blog certainly retains that love for sartorial excellence, are there any current pretenders to your crown?

I am glad to say the sartorial standards of djs has greatly improved of late but its still hard to beat Mr Weatheralls threads.

If Saaam Farahmand did a film about Bugged Out who would play Justin Robertson?

The celluloid me? A young Yul Brynner or maybe Jeremy Brett with a swimming hat on.

When was the last time you went on a rollercoaster?

I fear all fairground rides since getting covered in someone else’s vomit on a whirly go round.

Finally, and most importantly why do you think Slutty Fringe is so great?

Erudite pronouncements on clothes and music! Heaven!

This Friday sees a swift return to Big Chill House as Slutty Fringe goes toe to toe with a slew of London’s mp3 blogs at the fiendishly titled BLOG PARTY….

The Beat, Oh Death, Feel My Bicep, This Ain’t No Disco, Pelski and Noboby Cares About Kitsune all involved on the night….

We’re on at 1.30am which should be fun seeing as Thursday evening is being spent in the company of The Sweeney and Azari & III and lots of sweaty people just off Curtain Road at horsemeatdiscobloodbath.

Bring Me To My Senses

29.03.10

Whilst we fire off another email to Stars & Heroes begging for some info on supposed new Siriusmo material on Monkeytown (thats right MDSLKTR we recall that boast of an album by the end of 2009) why don’t you enjoy this mix the reclusive musical genius cum graf artist did for the bushy browed Shir Khan’s radio show last week.

Along Came A Spider

dance

Tonight if you’re in (east) London and feel the lure of the night there is as ever a ridiculous amount of options on offer, but there’s three clear winners in my eyes and frankly that’s what really matters.

First up Johnno of Bugged Out, Damon Martin of Disco Bloodbath and Justin Quirk of Iron Maiden bigging up fame, will be getting nautical at new Shoreditch nitery Concrete, the night’s called Sail On Sailor and as you could expect smooth sounds and yacht rock are all on the captain’s menu.

Next up it’s Defunkt and the always amazing Andy Blake guesting alongside the debut live show from Horrors side project The Spider and The Flies. It all goes down at The Russian on Kingsland Road and you can head over to The Beat’s blog now for a new Andy Blake mix.

Finally staying in Dalston it’s Cocadisco who are holding a launch party for Angular‘s essential Cold Wave and Minimal Electronics compilation at Alibi. Keeping things frosty will be Luke Eargoggle, Cocadisco DJs and more.

Finish the night off with a cheeky kebab and you’re sorted.

Together Alone

25.03.10

In 2007 anyone who was someone had a blog….

In 2010 anyone who is someone that has a blog has record label….

Who knows where we’ll be in 2013?

(Hopefully gazillionaires living it up in Beunos Aires)

Joining the ranks of esteemed blog cum scene rcrd lbls, which includes among others 20JFGs, Discobelle, Feel My Bicep, Fluokids and Slutty Fringe are long term blog standards Big Stereo.

The honour of the inaugaural release on the ingeniously titled Big Stereo Records is bestowed upon Baby Monster and their song She Comes Alive which is released on seven inches of vinyl glory on Monday – details for purchase here.

You might have heard the original and the JOCKS remix, now you can hear the awesome remix by the golden boy of Gomma Recs Goldenbug!

Again The Addiction

24.03.10

Whilst the internet engages in a bout of brouhaha over MGMTs supposed sub par Bowie-isms on their new opus, we’d rather throw some words of praise at Phrases, the new EP from fellow Brooklynite and expert in lo fi fuzzisms Blank Dogs.

Released on his own Captured Tracks imprint, this four track EP picks up where last years superlative sludge filled album Under & Under left off and veers in a direction not dissimilar to the sounds you might have heard on the recent Cold/Minimal Wave compilations.

Butterflies And Bogeymen

23.03.10

This Saturday sees the ICA hark back to a controversial point in the venue’s illustrious history with an all day and night event dedicated to Cosey Fanni Tutti.

The Gristle Throbber and solo artiste caused a storm in 1976 with an exhibition at the ICA of self pornographic images which outraged the more conservative media (and more recently formed an amusing interlude to the po faced Pop Life exhibition at the Tatte Modern)

Whilst the day time programme of talks, presentations and experimental perfromances is all a bit high brow for philistines like me, the evenings festivites under the nom de plume of Cosey Club are certainly worth shaking a leg with live performances from FF (nee Factory Floor) and Fixmer/Mccarthy and a DJ set from the increasingly ludicrously moustachioed Sir Andrew Weatherall.

Chopping Up The Intrigue

23.03.10

If we were Pitchfork/FACT journos we might brand Rainbow Arabia globe trotting, kaleidoscopic, tropical, fourth world pop or something and fill vast paragraphs with intricate sentences.

Instead we make light of such approaches, rejoice in the splendidness that is Rainbow Arabia’s studio being called Muppet Palace and engage in golf claps at the duo’s decision to release a slew of RA centric remixes from the likes of Pictureplane, young Max Justus, Myd and this Mexicans With Guns effort (our favourite)

Simple Pleasures

21.03.10

If Telepathe were ocean deep voiced goth chicks from Wisconsin they might make music like Zola Jesus.

Zola Jesus’ new EP Stridulum contains 6 tracks of woozy orchestral thump which are surpassed in the impressive stakes only by the EP cover art which screams Crude Oil Bukakke.

Zola Jesus – I Can’t Stand

Buy the Stridulum EP from iTunes.
