Slutty Fringe Mix Series: The Deadstock 33

31.03.10

Well we don’t like to brag but if you follow Rory Phillips‘ tweets you’ll have seen that barely 2 days after his mix went up on Slutty Fringe he was partying in Miami with P Diddy. Now I’m not saying the two are directly related but well it makes you think doesn’t it.

Right with no further delay onto number 3 in our series and this time it is the turn of The Deadstock 33s, the latest nom de disque of veteran DJ/producer/immaculately tailored chap about town Justin Robertson.

From his days dancing to acid house on the floor of The Hacienda, right through his residencies at seminal clubnights like Spice and the Rebellious Jukebox Club, releases as Lionrock and Revtone, eccentic Top of the Pops appearances epic, and legenedary sets at clubs like Bugged Out, Justin has been a key figure throughout the past two decades of dance music.

And now his crowning achievement, immortality on these very pages.

Describing his Deadstock 33s releases as psych-house, the mix below is an exceptional trawl through the outer regions of psychedelic disco, just perfect for BBQs, acid fuelled freak outs and late night sex jams.

We caught up with Justin to see where his head is currently at…

Hi Justin, how are you doing this fckn freezing morning?

Very happy pressing buttons in my studio, dreaming of summer

Deadstock 33s is quite a unique name – is there some signifigance to it? do you play all your disco 45s at 33 for that extra spacey sound?

Now thats a good idea, kinda disco new beat vibe! Its named after a particular edition of vintage levis!

Can you give a little description of what to expect in your mix?

The Deadstock 33s vibe is all about galactic disco, quite psychedelic, trippy disco I guess, with a Balearic cap worn at a jaunty angle !

As well as last years awesome Drifting On A Wave EP you’ve done quite a few remixes of impressive artists such as In Flagranti and Erol & Alex of late, what else can we expect from Deadstock 33s?

It’s going to be an exciting year, I have an album ready for later this year called “Underneath The Pines”, singles for Is It Balearic and Paper as well as some psych-disco EPs on my new Solitary Cyclist label!

I’ve also just done remixes for The Ghost on Sunday Best, and for Argentine band Poncho featuring Karen O, also working on some re-edits for Tronik youth’s new edits label, so keeping busy!

Jockey Slut used to call you the best dressed man in dance music and your blog certainly retains that love for sartorial excellence, are there any current pretenders to your crown?

I am glad to say the sartorial standards of djs has greatly improved of late but its still hard to beat Mr Weatheralls threads.

If Saaam Farahmand did a film about Bugged Out who would play Justin Robertson?

The celluloid me? A young Yul Brynner or maybe Jeremy Brett with a swimming hat on.

When was the last time you went on a rollercoaster?

I fear all fairground rides since getting covered in someone else’s vomit on a whirly go round.

Finally, and most importantly why do you think Slutty Fringe is so great?

Erudite pronouncements on clothes and music! Heaven!
