Time of the Year

29.04.10

You know that empty feeling post-Fashion Weeks (of course you do) when you’re all free Evian-ed out and feel pretty vapid as a human being for fretting so much over your hosiery schedule over the week? Well come April, press days make up for it with a few goodie bags and holy crap a Dover Street Market bank holiday sale!

Mickey mouse gloves on sheer shirts and upside down hats await you this Sat -  Mon, 10AM – 7PM at The Old Depot in Angel. Actual woop.

No Escaping This

29.04.10

Golf claps to Leo Zero for initiating the boompty house revival with Get Deep, which wraps a classic house vocal from Roland Clark in layers of bass heavy NYC & Chicago haus sampledelia.

Out now on his own Wigwam imprint – go seek vinyl heads.

Slutty Fringe Mix Series: Cosmo Lopez

28.04.10

After a brief hiatus our mix series returns with a new set from Cosmo Lopez. With a new EP out in May on his own Keep Up! label our Paraguayan friend has delivered an hour long mix containing fresh Keep Up! exclusives (cue Westwood-style bomb noise) and tracks from the likes of Hot City and Mosca.

Kicking off with some serious late night disco boogie, Lopez smoothly shifts through the gears dropping solid haus jams before it all goes a little bit funky by the end, all in all a perfect house party mix and the just the thing to get you warmed up for the forthcoming Zapping EP.

As is customary we repaid Lopez’s hard work with some stupid questions.

Hola Senor Lopez, ¿Cómo estás?

Bien, gracias, señores Fringe. Aqui, jugando con los sintetizadores.

Your new EP is out in May, tell us in five words why our readers should buy it?

Otherwise kidnapped family will die

What’s the one record you couldn’t live without?

Ooff, tough one. I don’t know about the other guys in Lopez but one of the records I keep going back to is Inspiration Information by Shuggie Ottis. Not the rarest or strangest I guess but it’s just such a wonderful record from start to finish. Everything is great on it, the musicianship, the atmosphere, the mellow vocals and those wicked drum machines, especially on my favourite tune off the album, XL-30. Shame about Shuggie’s premature death otherwise he would have been hugely popular, maybe even much more than the sugary sweet Stevie Wonder.

If you were to form the Lopez Allstars Live Band, who from the history of recorded music would you conscript?

Drums – Tony Williams
Bass – Bootsy
Moog – Bernie Worrell
Keyboards – Herbie Hancock, Bernard Wright
Horns – Miles, Stanley, Fred
Percussion – Ray Barretto
Maracas/Ad hoc – Bez

Most of those are kaput so we would make a killing if we toured with these zombies.

There’s a fair few of you involved in Keep Up! how do you resolve arguements over whose record gets released next or who to book for your parties?

Haha, good one. Well at the moment there is 3 of us concentrating on the label and the other 2  on the parties, the important decisions are made by all of us but the petty ones like should we provide burgers or pies as part of the rider for x artist are decided by the ones who are in charge of that area. Obviously there are moments were we all want to kill each other but  we tend to resolve things by calling each other names and then voting.

And finally we must know when was the last time you went on a haunted house ride?

Must have been 12, some friends and I went  on one. This being Paraguay you can imagine that the scary bits were less than scary and the whole thing was quite pathetic, more scarecrows than scary monsters . If I remember well my mate got slapped because he tried in on with this girl on the ride, she got scared and jumped on him and the Latin blood got the best of him. They are now married though.

Also, it was the last time I had candy floss. Mmmm, candy floss.

Love & Rockets

28.04.10

Adding credence to the notion (admittedly, a thought proposed mostly by just me) that remixes of Health sound better than Health are LA newcomers Delivery whose forcoming treatment of Death + displays fully their deep love for the synthesiser.

Further evidence of this love can be found in Delivery’s remix of Clay Stones by their fellow LA bro’s We Are The World which dips the pounding tropical techno thump of the original in several layers of vintage synth plink and muddies up the vocal nicely,

Set It Off

26.04.10

If Shannon Sossamon was a website then she’d be Neu Magazine.

Swoonsomely pretty and knows her onions about music*

If you want some evidence, why you need to look no further than the recently published interview with Stephen Bassface and Michael, the two parts that form the massive pulsing pink brain that makes all the decisions at Moshi Moshi.

It was this pulsing pink brain that commisioned Alexander The Astronomer to remix Lo Fi Fnk and see what a good idea that turned out to be.

* we’re not sure if Neu has any plans to engage in an acting career that has veered towards shoddy b movie thrillers of late but we’d advise against it

Older and Wiser

dummylogo1

Next week (Friday 30th) one of our favourite websites Dummy celebrate their first year of online existence with a party at The Macbeth in Shoreditch.

From features on The Knife through to love letters to male falsettos, Dummy has gone from strength to strength the past twelve months.

Teaming up with Dollop they’ve put together what we like to call a proper line-up with Warp’s Hudson Mohawke and Egyptian Hip-Hop, playing live and Kill Em All’s Stopmakingme on the decks.

Get your advance tickets here.

Under Your Spell

21.04.10

This is the post where Silver Columns go afrocentric piano house crazy on Marchin In, the recent track from our fav Scandinavian electropop dudes Lo Fi Fnk (missed you)

Watch out for yet another (probably) amazing Astronomer treatment too all via the lovely Moshi Moshi imprint.

Revolution Is A Lie

21.04.10

Went to the EYOE Caribou gig last night with some of London’s finest record label peeps/music writers/gin and tonic spillers.

Watching Gold Panda jerk his torso out of time on stage whilst eeking odd vocal/string samples and brutal machine funk from a variety of technological sources brought to mind a lab coat wearing Ron Senseless from Nathan Barley ploughing a midget.

Caribou live was one long awesome cosmiche groove – definitely a band to see at the festivals this summer (can imagine Field Day in the sun would be good -you know if it’s actually sunny on Field Day)

The above presents a handy excuse to post Mondkopf’s creeping techno throb remix of Sun which has been annoying my neighbours for the past week.

To All The Girl (Units)

21.04.10

The inexorable rise to global gutterhaus dominance mapped out by Night Slug boffins Alex Bok and Jimmy 1990 comes a step closer on Monday with the much anticipated 3rd release on their imprint from Girl Unit (seen above tweeeting his fave meatball recipe)

To celebrate this they are running a competition that retains the dublate culture of the music they grew up on with the title track IRL having been pressed up on a 12″acetate dubplate by Bok Bok yesterday (watch the video here) and given away to the person who is brainsmart enough to know

WHAT DOES “GIRL UNIT” STAND FOR ?

Good luck comrade.

Bleach House

20.04.10

toro420

Well this is nice, taken from South Carolina based Toro y Moi‘s debut album Causer Of This (out now on Carpark Records), Blessa is a woozy slice of superior chilled out psychedelic pop.

Imagine a sun bleached photo of a windswept beach that has then faded over the years, well that’s what this sounds like. Kind of…

Anyway if you live in the US then check his website for live dates as he’s just about to embark on an epic tour, with a full live band, alongside the also rather wonderful Caribou.

Jack Your Body House Your Mind

20.04.10

Resident Advisor has just published a oral history of Optimo Espacio, interviewing regulars from the past 13 years, artists who have played and the people involved in the running of the night and is a pretty goddamn excellent read.

Anyone with a passing interest in this genre bending club institution should click on.

Golf claps to all involved and you should check out the new Fabric mix by Twitch and Wilkes, it’s up there with the best mixes in the Fabric/Fabric live canon.

The Mysticism Of Magnetism

19.04.10

If the minke whales that swim about off the coasts of Scandinavia leant how to operate a vintage synth or two they might make music like After, this surreal track from the recently released and completely mesmerising self titled album by Swedish synth boffs Roll The Dice

Roll The Dice – After (buy)

Going down a similar path of weirded out ivory tinkling and synth wobbling is ARP and Anthony Moore’s collection of collaborations known to record stores as FRKWYS Vol3 – I wrote a review of it for Juno Plus which approaches the subject with more detail and like everything RVNG INTL put their hands to FRKWYS Vol 3 is all sorts of greatness.

From FRKWYS Vol 3 is Spinette which is perhaps the most lively track (and contains absolutely no whales for those freaked out by the above)

They’re All Bastards

15.04.10

debate part 1

Having just witnessed the dying days of what will probably go down in history as one of the most rotten UK parliaments in recent times, the airwaves are again full of lies and bullshit as the forked tounged scions of Westminster try to convince us that, you know they listen to us and give a shit.

Anyway tonight should be interesting (I say should as I’ll actually be in the pub) as the leaders of the main three parties come together in the first of three historic Britain’s Got Talent style debates.

debate-part-4

Of course no one will actually ‘debate’ anything but I’m sure there will be a few vaguely amusing soundbites and hopefully Brown will lose his notorious temper and go on a studio rampage like some wounded tartan Godzilla.

debate part 9

One of our friends Justin Quirk has taken time from his day job of writing about the likes of Iron Maiden and not turning up to any of the DJ gigs I book him for to take, what the papers would call, a satirical sideswipe at the ‘presidential style’ debates.

As is the way with things knocked out on the quick they really are funnier than they have any right to be and will probably eclipse his career for years to come. You can see them all here.
