Is Worth Two Hundred In The Bush

28.05.10

It seems like a long, long time ago that we were getting all excited about The Hundred In The Hands‘, (un)Dressed In Dresden. But here we are almost a year and a half later and the band, freshly signed to Warp Records, have finally released a new 6 track EP, This Desert.

Luckily for all concerned it’s really rather good. Minimal, arty disco meets skeletal post-punk, kind of like the perfect soundtrack to my imaginary New York.

Anyway it’s out now, the video for Tom Tom is above and there’s a download of Ghosts below, and we recommend you go buy the whole EP.

Slutty Fringe Mix Series: Simon A Carr (TINAE)

27.05.10

Next up in Slutty Fringe mix series we have Simon A Carr, responsible for making all the decisions at This Is Not An Exit Recordings HQ.

A fair bit has gone on since we endowed the honour of Label Of The Month on them a few months ago so we decided it was pertinent to pepper him with further silly questions (sorry Simon)

How is your day going so far?

Pretty good. Just got the Optimo Remix of Command V’s new single in my inbox which is sounding pretty dam good.

Have you been happy with the response to Manifesto #1?

Lots of people have commented on how great Manifesto #1 is and hopefully it’s brought some new people into the fold. Jonnie Wilkes from Optimo said he couldn’t stop listening to it which is the kind of response we like. We haven’t sold many though – if you’re reading this and haven’t bought it go and BUY IT.

What’s upcoming on the release front?

Thisisnotanexit Summer Sampler 2010 which will be a download release in June featuring an unreleased Faze Action Remix of Hatchback’s Jetlag, the Moscow Remix of Command V’s Hello and a big remix of Detachments The Flowers That Fell by urlaubshits called “urlaubshits minimal rave mix” which does what it says on the tin.

The other big releases are Command V’s debut single Lost On Me featuring remixes from Optimo, Jacques Renault, Max Pask and Night Plane followed by their debut album and Detachments summer single Hol Rom featuring remixes from Cosmo, Andy Blake and Will Saul and followed by their debut album which is finally finished and sounding amazing – a real mixture of modern day synth pop mixed with post punk and minimal wave.

TINAE are taking it to the clubs with a  monthly night at tinyThe Drop, what’s the deal?

We’d been looking for a venue to hold regular Thisisnotanexit events at for a while and The Drop really fitted with what we wanted – really small, great soundsystem, stage for bands (and most importantly 5 minutes from Thisisnotanexit HQ).

We’re not going to have any guest DJs as I go to club nights and am never sure of the music policy and what they stand for as they have guests all night. Where have all the residents gone! So it’s going to me and Spectral Empire all night long month in month out (apart from when I go on holiday and we might ask a friend to cover).

We’ll be playing the records we always wanted to play out – so weird stuff at the beginning of the night and then a mixture of more danceable stuff later on taking in minimal wave, synth pop, EBM, weird disco records, post punk and house house house music.

We will though book different bands for each month – Detachments will be playing at the first one and we’ve got Night Plane booked for July. Factory Floor who we would love to book are ignoring my emails though. They’re the sort of band we want to book.

Are you one of those people that says Stokey?

Yes. I also once said the “N16 massive” which I will never ever do again.

Well I forgive you,  Stokey has lost out in the cringe stakes to She Bu of late, tell us a bit about your mix for Slutty Fringe?

I’m terrible at doing mixes as get so obsessed with smooth gliding key matches and liquid transitions. I tried to ignore that and just put together a bunch of stuff that I really really love at the moment and sums up the sort of music you might hear at the monthly club night. It’s a bit weird and a bit dark but hopefully a little different from the usual 60 minute nu-disco workouts.
Plus there’s a couple of new Thisisnotanexit jams on there.

Finally, I’ve become obsessed with the idea of escaping it all and moving to in Costa Rica to work in the sloth orphanage, if you had your fill of running a successful indie label what would your escape plan be?

I’d probably just put all the remaining stock in a big pile, burn it all, film it and then just leave the Thisisnotanexit site up with a video of the fire. I’d then move to Berlin and write “This is not how to run a record label – the story of Thisisnotanexit Records”.

Kinema_Circles_420

So our own little label Hot Pockets has just popped out another release, this time the long awaited, much anticipated Circles by :Kinema:, available on limited edition sunshine yellow vinyl (honestly it looks gorgeous) and as a 4 track digital EP.

On the seven you get the original of Circles plus a remix of Lets Get To It by Hot Chip’s current sticksman and all round pop genius in his own right Grovesnor.

On the digital EP you also get the original mix of Lets Get To It and former Hot Pockets star Line‘s mix of Circles. Buy the 7″ and we’ll give you the full EP as MP3s. It should be in shops now/soon, but buy direct from us here, and we don’t lose so much money!

As an extra bonus we’ve asked a few producers to have a go at remixing Circles for us and here we present a housey re-rub from the wonderful Secondo, who you should know from his releases on Soul Jazz and his own Dreck label.

SMS_new A5 flyer-03

Over the past few years Croatia has firmly established itself as the thinking clubbers’ summer alternative to Ibiza. Most of the credit for this can go to the people behind The Garden in Petrcane, which now hosts a whole summer season of amazing festivals.

We were out there last summer and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular, the weather is amazing, Petrcane is a lovely coastal village, food and drink are worryingly cheap and there really is nothing nicer than paddling in the azure blue sea whilst chilling out to blissed out Balearic beats.

This year sees another new name join the Petrcane rollcall, Stop Making Sense. With a line-up that includes the likes of Carl Craig, Optimo, Allez Allez, The Very Best and Friendly Fires it’s clearly going to be a bit special, and that was before they asked us to DJ (main stage – Saturday afternoon – seaside sounds from the long seventies).

Tickets are on sale now and are going fast.

The Weekend Starts Yesterday

2

Tonight is part 2 of the How’s My Raving? weekender. After kicking things off in style at the Big Chill Bar last night, the action moves north to the increasingly ill named Big Chill House.

Joining the HMR crew tonight will be the balaclava’ed legend that is DJ Stingray. An integral part of the Detroit’s Urban Tribe, Stingray is an amazing DJ, mixing up the finest hard electro and techno.

If that wasn’t enough they’ve got Daniel Haaksman jetting in from Berlin too, expect nothing but the best tropical house, techno and baile funk from the Man Recordings bossman. It all kicks off at 8pm, is free in before 10 and then just a fiver. Sorted.

Anyway you’ve got a few hours to kill between now and then, the sun is shining and it looks like BBQ weather so download this cumbia mix that EL-B put together exclusively for the HMR crew and get yourself in the mood for a night of totally tropical partying.

Cubic’s Rube

Bag_large

Ok see that? That bag is literally your ticket to PARTAY, as of last night three of these bags have been squirrelled away in ‘naughty’ locations around London.

Your mission, should you wish to accept it, is to hunt down the bags, retrieve the cubes inside, and then come join us for some VIP treatment at the Subject60 Launch party in London on June 2nd, where Lykke Li, Face Hunter and Queens of Noize will be holding court.

London is of course a fairly big place, so we’re not just going to send you off blind, oh no. Instead we’re going to get all hi-tech and Mission Impossible on your asses.

Below is a map giving you a rough idea of where the bags are hidden, looks great but on it’s own still probably not much help.

But follow these six steps and you too can soon be living life high on the hog.

1. Go to ‘Click to Start Search’ on the map.

2. Download the LAYAR app to your Android Phone or iPhone 3GS.

3. Go to one of the three locations on the map. Open this link on your phone: http://subject60.com/c/?sluttyfringe to activate LAYAR (TIP – don’t forget to bookmark the link in LAYAR)

4. Start searching for the hidden cube.

5. Register the 6 digit code once you’ve found the hidden cube.

6. Party Hard.

Simple isn’t it!? Though I’m afraid that if like me you have a prehistoric piece of shit for a phone then you’ll just have to start your own blog, write about nonsense and music for four years and then you’ll probably get invited to these things anyway.

Actually, on reflection, finding cubes hidden in London sounds like a lot more fun and much less hassle. I’m led to believe the map will update itself as the cubes are found and registered so keep checking back to make sure you’re still in the game.

A Greater Reward

21.05.10

Todays hungover search for a dash of synth heavy thunping Gallic house music with nagging basslines has lead us to relative upstarts Logo and their remix of the new Bot’Ox single Overdrive.

Download: Bot’Ox – Overdrive (Logo Remix)

Environ boss Morgan Geist has a crack at Overdrive too with typically splendid and somewhat clunky results.

Watch out for a further re/treat from Thomas Rub N Tug Bullock under his Welcome Stranger guise when Overdrive is released on I’m A Cliche on June 7th.

Detroit native Jimmy Edgar is back with some more electro funk to get your freak on to. Proper Motor City sex music made by someone who, in his latest press photo at least, looks like an end of level rapist from a mid-eighties arcade game.

It probably shouldn’t work but somehow it does.

He’s got a new album XXX out in July on !K7 and he’s dropping a free track, Raw Hot Sex, now to get you all lubed up and ready for his big entrance.

Hide And Seek

20.05.10

Throughout May and June the Subject60 launch party will be touring 5 European cities: London, Berlin, Paris, Milan and Madrid, to promote the new Volvo S60. Each event will be attended by a handpicked, select guest list and hosted by Lykke Li and Face Hunter.

Subject60 Code Search is a competition for your readers. The prize consists of two VIP tickets to attend the exclusive Subject60 party in London.
We’ve physically hidden three code cubes (tickets) in naughty locations around town for your readers to find. The area in which the cubes are hidden will be shown on a map that you upload to your site. By using an app on their iPhone 3GS or Google Android phones your readers can then follow simple directions to discover the exact locations of the hidden cubes. Each cube is marked with a unique code that when registered grants the finder (and a friend) access to the Subject60 event.

So far, so interesting, but I’m guessing what you want to know is how do you get to go… Well I’d like to say it’s simple but I’m afraid you’re going to have to work for this one.

Somewhere right now in London 3 bags are being hidden in ‘naughty’ locations, each bag contains two cubes, and it is these cubes that are your tickets to a night of VIP treatment.

Tomorrow we’ll be posting up the map that combined with one of those fancy mobile phone app things (don’t ask me, my phone’s about 8 years old) will help you find the cubes and get your party on. Hold tight!
