London DJ collective Lostbahnhof have been adding meat to the bones of London’s clubs for the past few years now. Whether running their own nights, guesting at clubs such as Cable or hosting a system at the Notting Hill Carnival, their mix of Disco, House, Garage, Techno, Dub and Soul is guaranteed to nice up the dance.
At the end of May (Sunday 30th, 3pm-Late) they are hosting their 2nd annual BBQ at Lati Ri in Shoreditch. Joining them on the decks will be the likes of Red Rack’em, The Heavenly Jukebox and a mystery guest, so special they wont even give us a clue as to their identity (spoilsports).
Anyway to celebrate this char grilled occassion we asked them to supply us with a mix and they’ve delivered in spades with this well marinaded selection. We caught up with Semtek for a quick natter about their mix and just what is Lostbahnhof…
Lostbahnwhat? Care to explain?
We went to Melt festival a couple of years ago, one of my friends lost it a bit and started shouting Ostbahnhof at the top of his voice. I suppose it’s equivalent to running round Glastonbury screaming Liverpool Street at the top of your voice. When he came to it seemed like an obvious thing to call the night.
So who makes up the Lostbahnhof crew then? Introduce yourselves…
We’re made up of Semtek (me), TK and James Broomfield. James and I have been doing nights in East London for almost ten years, TK joined us when we started Losbahnhof and he’d been part of Broader Than Broadway before that. James has his own thing putting on occasional events for people like Nicky Siano from New York, and I also record as Semtek on Don’t Be Afraid, so we all bring different things to the night.
Fancy telling us a bit about this mix…
My big thing at the moment is Frankfurt techno of the early nineties, so I (Semtek) made sure there was some Torsten Fenslau (Culture Beat producer) on there (Ideas For Imitators – Der Komtur), James (Broomfield) contributed some of the more jacking tracks like the wonderful Lauer – MTX9 track on Permanent Vacation, and Toby (TK) chimed in with some Bottin and the penultimate Joy Orbison track.
You’re having a BBQ on the 30th? What’s cooking?
Last year we got a call out of the blue asking if we wanted to do an outdoor party in Shoreditch on the May 30th Bank Holiday. We turned up with some speakers and a pair of decks not really knowing what to expect.
Because it was a Bank Holiday there were tonnes of people around and we hadn’t quite anticipated how popular it would be. We ended up with a street party of sorts on our hands, which continued until the speakers blew spectacularly at 2am. This year we’ll (probably) be better prepared.
Any special BBQ tricks do you have up your sleeves?
You’ll want to try the Lostbahnhof Special Aji Marinade:
Olive Oil
3 Jalapeno Chillies (Chopped)
Juice of 1 Lime
Garilc (Chopped)
1 Green Onion (Chopped)
Bunch Cilantro Leaves (Chopped) or Parsley (Chopped)
Salt
Pepper
Place in a bowl and mix together, then add the meat/fish to be barbecued and refrigerate for as long as possible. Goes especially nicely with fish or seafood kebabs!
And when you’re not standing at the firepit where else can people get their Lostbahnhof on?
We have a party inside Notting Hill Carnival every year, so expect more news about that soon, plus we hold regular nights at LIFE Bar, underneath the Japanese Sushi restaurant.
