Dance Mania

30.06.10

I’m going to assume you’ve read all about Shangaan Electro by now, if not quickly pop over to Dazed and buff up. Anyway the compilation that has got lots of people all in a lather is finally out this week on Honest Jons.

For good reason a lot attention has gone to the videos of the Tshetsha Boys in their clown costumes, but for me it’s the track above that I’ve had to play on repeat the last couple of weeks.

Go buy it, it’s strange and beautiful and crazy and surprising and everything you should want from music.

HAUS Nation

So we’re onto HAUS party #4 and thankfully this time we don’t have to share the night with those overpaid perverts in the England football team, we are though sharing the night with the mighty fine lookign Stop Making Sense festival.

Regulars readers of this little corner of the web will hopefully already be aware of Stop Making Sense, a brand new 3 day festival in Croatia this September featuring the likes of Carl Craig, Optimo, The Very Best, Nathan Fake and Matias Aguyo and us.

To get you warmed up we’re welcoming some of the festival’s other highlights such as Friendly Fires, Allez-Allez, Loose Fit, Leon Lace and Naomi from Girlcore to 93 Feet East for what should be our biggest and best HAUS night yet.

As ever it’s free in before 8pm, and just £5 after, there’s BBQ in the courtyard and hot bodies on the dancefloor. Strašan! as they say in Croatia.

HAUS – A Stop Making Sense Special

Tony Poland & John Power Jr.

I’m Still Standon

30.06.10

Standon calling_crowd_fields

If you weren’t one of the lucky ones who won tickets in our Dour Festival competition last week then never fear as we have another chance to enjoy a weekend of free al-fresco musical delights, this time courtesy of my own favourite UK festival Standon Calling.

Taking place 6-8th August in, you guessed it, Standon in Hertfordshire I’ve been going for about 5 years now (in fact me and Tony have DJ’ed in the cowshed a couple of times) and is about the only festival in the UK I’d even consider going to and camping at these days.

The line-up is always great, especially considering the festival only has a capacity of a couple of thousand, and this year sees the likes of Etienne de Crecy, Metronomy, Liars, Efterklang, Pantha du Prince, Fucked Up, Gold Panda and Factory Floor strut their stuff on the various stages.

Best of all (for me at least) it’s only about 40 minutes away from London, small enough to actually see everyone you might want to and well let’s just say you’ll be hard pressed to find a more relaxed festival.

If (like me) the tv coverage of Glastonbury just left you astonished that people would willingly intern themselves in a makeshift refugee camp the size of a small county then trust me this is the festival for you.

And so we have a pair of tickets to give away… Simply answer the easy question below and email us the answer before Friday 9th July for a chance to win.

Q: Standon Calling started as a birthday BBQ for the festival’s founder Alex Trenchard, but how many friends were invited along to that first party?

Good luck, and we’ll see you in the cocktail tent.

Sowing The Seeds

29.06.10

Oh look it’s a new video for the new single from Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and you know what both video and track are actually rather good. If I sound surprised, well it’s not that I don’t like what he has done in the past just this is lots, lots better.

Anyway it’s out now on the wonderful Greco Roman label , and you can also download a track below track that didn’t make it onto the EP but is still pretty good, albeit being more of a club number, what with its skippy house beats and stabs.

Summer In The City

29.06.10

Photo: Tom Medwell

It’s been a while since we’ve a) mentioned Crystal Fighters or b) wheeled out the old EXCLUSIVE siren, so despite it being so muggy right now that all I want to do is dive head first into a giant caiprinha lets rectify both with this hot off the press Tek-One remix of CF’s new single.

Download: Crystal Fighters – In The Summer (Tek One Remix)

Sounding a bit like a load of Autobots and Deceptacons settling their BEEF via the medium of breakdancing, in Croydon, Tek One’s remix has more low end wobble than a big fat jelly badonkadonk. All very fun and noisy.

Should you fancy hearing the original version of the track you can pop over to the band’s site where they are giving it away for free.

Their debut album ‘Star of Love’ is out Mid September and if you’re in London next week you can catch our favourite shouty Basques at The Hoxton Bar & Grill on the 6th.

Swapping bongos for stabby synths and echoing vocals, LuckyPDF’s My Panda Shall Fly transforms Pirate Soundsystem‘s new track Dub N U to a slower downtempo 5-minute wonder. Lovely stuff.

Heres A Little Story

25.06.10

If Slutty Fringe lived in Philadelphia it would be awesome on so many levels, not least cos we could gorge ourselves on the highly regarded philly cheese steaks, but also cos we could attend the best party ever in Making Time.

Tonight for example The Rapture & Holy Ghost play live, RVNG INTL slacker Dave P does his celebrity DJ thing inbetween, Rocktits get all psychedelic on your bum in the basement and Pink Skull, Adam Sparkles and Broadzilla dudes take over the hypercage  and play a heady mix of rad new wave, house, nowave, disco, electro, acidrain and sparklemotion.

Le sigh…

So instead we make do with this mix from Adam Sparkles of tracks selected by Pink Skull and Broadzilla DJs and includes music from the likes of In Flagranti, Tame Impala, Yello, Pilooski, Pete Herbert, and Hot Chocolate.

Soundcloud: Escape From The Hypercage Vol 2 – Mixed By Adam Sparkles

No full tracklist on this but a sherbert dip to anyone who does the hard work.

Can A Man Hear Me

24.06.10

JR Seaton does parties with Milo Smee from the slightly scary Chrome Hoof and makes music that melds classic Chicago jack with elements of cosmiche.

No surprise then that Robi Headman has added the Berlin based Londoner to his Relish clan, with Seaton releasing ‘She Had A Wing’ his debut EP for the imprint on Monday.

Here Headman himself adds some disco pogo fuzz to Seaton’s ‘Elke Brill’.

It seems that Motor City Drum Ensemble surpasses himself with every new release this year. His remix of Archie Bronson Outfit was one of our favourites so far – transforming the Goldsworthy assisted scuzz funk of ‘Hoola’ into 8 minutes of 117bpm Detroit influenced bliss.

And then we heard the MCDE Toby Tobias remix!

Panico are back!

The Chilean post punk act drop Kick, their fourth album,  on the imperious Tigersushi imprint later this year – the first fruits can be heard on their website and Tigersushi boss man Joakim has delivered this suitably awesome remix of the track ‘Reverberation Mambo’ which will appear next to the letters B/W on the new single ‘Bright Lights’.

 HEALTH-Disco2

This is the post where all round lo fi genius (and quite swoonworthy) Nite Jewel adopts a typically different approach to the music of LA noiseniks Health – turning their track ‘Die Slow’ into a hypnotic laid back 5 minute globule of sonic lovliness. Look out for more bands making Health sound better on the  Health Disco 2 album which is released tommorow via the Lovepump United imprint.
