WORD LOVE

Slutty Fringe Mix Series: RVNG INTL

10.06.10

Long time readers of Slutty Fringe will know the crush we have on all things RVNG INTL related – hell they would probably be our label of ALL TIME if we managed to mature the Label Of The Month feature past it’s inaugural gambit – everything they put out seems to fit our tastes.

So it feels right to endow RVNG INTL’s resident workaholic Matt Werth the honour of our tenth mix. As with last weeks excellent Radioolio mix, Matt deviates far from the parameters of kick drums and arpeggiated synths into  the world of freakbeat oddities and melodic monk chanting.

Next month sees the release of the imperious Hideous Racket EP from Allez Allez on the NYC imprint, read on for what else to expect from RVNG INTL this year and beyond – really reccommend you check out Matt’s interview with Kiran Sande at FACT too – a great read.

Hi Matt, how are things in NYC?

Summer in the city. Sticky and icky. I dig the sweet sweat though.

So the (fckn excellent) Allez Allez EP is dropping soon – how did you come by securing these tracks?

Tracks were captured during some e-mail exchanges with Sam Willis, the proprietor of the Allez-Allez site and music production duo. I loved how the five tracks (there is a bonus “Scrunge” version of “Hideous Racket” on the digital version of the EP) worked together. And I liked the idea of releasing something that runs conceptually parallel with a blog culture benchmark. I feel like the EP is proof in the pudding that the A-A boys know what they champion and can translate this on a very musical level.

There’s some excellent remixes too, that Thee Lone Four Horsemen epic in particular – were the artist choices made by AA or RVNG?

The Wesley Matsell and Thee Lone Four Horsemen remixes were coordinated by A-A. I love them both. And I love that we could link up with Stuart from 20JFG. Sometimes it feels like we’re releasing music for those dudes and those dudes alone, that’s how well they get us / know us. Pink Skull contributed a really wonderful remix of “Seven Down Six Across” too between working on their new album and a side project called Clean Plate. Look for both on RVNG in 2011.

What’s up for RVNG after that? Theres the Blondes release right?

Beyond the Pink Skull projects, the second two installments of the historics Infidelity 12″s will both be out by the end of summer and two more FRKWYS installments will be out by the end of the year.

Blondes are working for their first release on RVNG. They’re tracking a pair of 8 and 10 minute songs live to 2″ tape at Atlantic Studios, which has become RVNG’s house studio for analog recording. Catch them on their UK / European dates very soon.

I hear murmurs of juan big release in the FRKWYS series soon too?

We’ll find out quite soon.

The last FRKWYS was some of the most beautiful music I’ve heard in some time,  what has the reception in general been?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, from the subscribers to the disco heads that have followed RVNG from the beginning. A lot went into the making of this series installment so it’s gratifying seeing it connect on so many levels. I was really stoked to hear Phil (Golf Channel) include a track on his recent mix for Test Pressing.

Do you think ARP and Anthony will continue to work together?

They will. At least in a live setting. We’re working on confirming them for a fall festival or two. Would love to bring them back to NYC too.

I’m curious as to the running of RVNG INTL, it seems like Dave P has quite the glamorous international DJ lifestyle leaving you to do all the hard work – like the Endless Bummer release?

I like hearing “Dave P” and “glamourous” mentioned in the same breath. Dave has A LOT going on between his international DJ lifestyle and Making Time / Fixed parties so it’s more by default that I’m thrown in the label nit n’ grit. And, actually, I don’t mind it whatsoever. We’re looking for summer interns, btw.

So when I asked you to do a mix for Slutty Fringe I gave you licence to go totally freakadelic and you certainly did! Can you tell us a bit about how it came together?

I’ve been re-listening to Wolfgang Press’ first album a lot recently and knew I wanted to feature that track somewhere in the SF mix. Not that “Prostitute” really establishes a musical theme but maybe defines a mood for the mix, which is – in my opinion – abrasive & disjointed with moments of melody. And that’s why the few tracks from the Ralph Records catalog are worked within.

What’s your favourite ride at Coney Island?

They’re all gone! Does Shoot the Freak count? It definitely doesn’t disturb me as much as it does her.

Finally, what’s your favourite thing about Slutty Fringe?

Whoring yourself for the music, not the money.
