The World We Left Behind

12.07.10

6195_raymond_cauchetier-À_bout_de_souffle_champs-Élysées

Eschewing the notion that this scribe is an uncultured ingot, I’d recommend a visit to the James Hyman gallery in central London for their La Nouvelle Vague exhibit which contains some iconic photography of the French New Wave Cinema from legendary photographer Raymond Cauchetier.

Staged to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Godard’s A Bout de Souffle it’s a chance to immerse yourself in the essence of this cinematic movement with many stills available for the first time.

Additionally it means you can apppreciate Jean Seberg in her swoon inducing pomp before her tragic descent into tramp shagging alcoholic oblivion.

The Guardian wrote some prissy words here and the exhibit runs from this Wednesday until the 28th August – full details here .

Take It To The Top

08.07.10

In which rising production duo LOL Boys take apart the ethereal sounds of Korallreven’s “Loved Up” and impose their broken patterns and neat percussive edits on proceedings for some sort of tropical dragwave chillgaze remix.

Go to ALTZNS for better pitchforkisms.

Download: Korallreven – Loved Up (LOL Boys)

Taken from the The Truest Faith EP released by the infinitely on point Acephale which is available now at iTunes and comes with further remixes from CFCF, Sail A Whale and Ghostape.

Connan The Destroyer

07.07.10

After  releasing a quite fantastic album earlier this year, Connan Mockasin has branched out into the luctrative world of designer apparel with a distinctive custard coloured teeshirt replete with a rather crude depiction of Connan smiling. These tshirts are now availble for purchase via Phantasy daddy Erol Alkan’s webstore.

(The Stokey dwelling parentals amongst you be sure to check out the Erol baby grower too)

Phantasy were so delighted with our words of praise back in May for the album they gave us one of these distinctive t shirts as a competition prize for the fashionista readers at Slutty Fringe!

For a chance of winning you need to form an impressive answer to the following quandry and direct it here.

If you possessed evil super powers what would you transform young Connan into instead of the requested Snat?

Competition closes 5pm Wednesday 14th July with the winner notified shortly afterwards.

This Crazy Sound

07.07.10

In which “Driftwood” signals the return of  James Pants to Slutty Fringe – last seen here being covered in overlong paragraphs of praise back on page 47.

The brilliantly monikered Pants has a new 6 track EP out entitled New Tropical via Stones Throw and it focuses for the main on superb sounding distortion heavy electrofunk of which “Driftwood” is a perfect two minute example.

Go forth and buy this spellbinding release.

Turning ON

margaretdurow_chair

Following the disastrous cleaning job after their 36 hour affair that is On & On & On… Fabric unleash their new night that’s halfway between, On.

Much more palatable for the part-time raver, they’ve featured a line-up from the likes of The Revenge and Holy Ghost, to one half of Hot Natured Jamie Jones, Tiefschwarz and a Room 3 of Berghain’s Steffi, Tama Sumo and Lakuti.

Don’t miss Gadi from Wolf + Lamb’s Double Standard Crew Love Mix for the Farringdon fellas.

Forever And A Day

02.07.10

There’s rarely a week where we don’t sit and ponder when Brookyln duo Telepathe might decide to grace our ears with new music – and believe that their astounding and criminally under appreciated debut album still gets regular play when some distraction to the sights and smells of London Public Transport is required.

The golf claps go to Crystal Fighters then, for hand picking Busy and Melissa as one of the acts to remix their album prefacing single “In The Summer” – which was featured earlier this week on these here pages in the form of a Tek One remix.

The Weekend Starts Here (part 34,512)

02.07.10

2080_FP_Nitesessions

Just a short note about a couple of parties this weekend that you may (if you’re in London) fancy checking out. First up it’s our friends at Time Out, who having turned gamekeeper are throwing the second of their imaginatively titled Time Out Nite Sessions at East Village in Shoreditch.

Competing against the mighty Black Stars for the public’s attention tonight they’ve put together a lineup that includes from former blog fave Riva Starr, Trailer Trash’s Hannah Holland and the brilliant SBTRKT, who every time I pop into a record store these days I seem to leave with a new ridiculously expensive record by.

By all accounts the first Nite Sessions was a riot (not literally of course) and it’s a fair bet this one will be every inch its equal.

Then on saturday I’ve been drafted in at the last minute to DJ up west with Tom Central from Keep Up at The Social, it’s free to get in and we’ll be playing the full spectrum of leftfield electronic music. Expect plenty of Shangaan Electro, footwurk and quite probably a fair few of those expensive SBTRKT records from me.

I haven’t been to the Social for a while (though funnily enough I’m playing there next Thursday too), but every night I’m there seems to end in total drunken annihilation so it should be great, I’ll even try and not play Bruce Springstein this time, no promises though.

Finally if you’re looking from something completely different then our friends at Radioolio are smearing themsleves in pomade as we speak in preperation for their Rock n Rolio night this Saturday at The Moustache Bar in Dalston. If you like the sight of grown mens hair weeping spunk in a hot sweaty basement then you’ve just found your favourite new club.

Army Of You

01.07.10

FLYER FINAL

Very quick one but if you’re in London tonight and fancy not only having a great night out but applying a little salve to you no doubt blackened soul then hotfoot it to Cargo where War Child are hosting this year’s Army of You party.

It’s a great line-up, with the likes of The Invisible, O. Children and Becomign Real playing live, and Disco 3000 (Erol, of course), Friendly Fires, Casper C, Oneman and Solo DJ’ing, but more importantly it’s an even better cause.

Set up to help children whose lives have been made frankly intolerably shit thanks to the cuntish actions of adults, War Child are active in some of the planet’s most dangerous war zones – Iraq, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

It really doesn’t take much to figure out that they are a cause worth supporting, that you get a fun night out of it is a bonus. Tickets are just £9 in advance (buy from WeGotTickets as they’re giving 20% of their booking fee to the charity) or £12 on the door.
