Houses‘ new album All Night is released on Lefse Records (also home to Neon Indian, How To Dress Well, Dominant Legs, etc etc) on October 19th and judging by the track they’re offering up it’s going to be gorgeous.
Allegedly recorded in some shithole, candle lit cabin in Hawaii after Mr Houses got laid off from his job and went all Walden on us, the album could be just the thing this recession needs to finally get some good press.
Musical genius comes in many forms, both the sublime and the ridiculous. Sometimes, maybe once in a generation we’re lucky enough to witness an artist who can straddle this divide. One such artist is Arturino Talamonti.
A man possessed of a truly unique voice, a man able to breathe life into the cold sterile works of lesser talents, a real man with real feelings, Arturino Talamonti is almost certainly a man.
Here for your pleasure are two britpop standards given the Talamonti treatment, quite simply unforgettable, the final section of his Manics cover possibly the most emotional piece of music you’ll have ever heard.

There’s not much we disagree about amongst ourselves at Slutty Fringe. Tony’s continued (and in my view frankly obstinate) refusal to worship at the altar of all things Aphex Twin related and his complete blind spot towards Chromeo the two that most readily spring to mind.
Anyway whilst a Chromeo remix of Windowlicker might actually make a certain perverse sense, I’ll have to make do with just winding him up the once this time with the new Noise Invaders Dub of Don’t Turn The Lights On. Fun Times.
Last seen on these pages going lo and slow on Robyn, our new favourite Swedes, Drop Out Orchestra, have turned their attention to Miss Diana Ross and that classic slice of melancholic soul ‘My World Is Empty Without You’.
The result, superbly pulled off glacial disco funk perfect for getting things going in dark rooms, whether nightclubs or bedrooms. If the bit where the bass kicks back in around 2.12 doesn’t make your life light up you need to check your pulse.
Just in case you’re all Optimo’ed out and don’t fancy Ekstravaganza tonight, Slutty Fringe favourites Andy Blake and Joe Hart, don their pith hats once more for another journey into a World Unknown joining the dots between those evergreen eighties staples, EBM, industrial, italo and acid house.
Quite possibly one of the best night in London at the moment, they’re joined in their Brixton hideout this time by the exceptional Finnish duo Villa Nah (who should you miss tonight are also playing alongside Tony and myself at Proud in Camden on Saturday).
Anyway as is customary Andy Blake has dug deep into his remarkable collection to assemble another mix to get you in a suitably icey cold war mood for tonight’s fun.
Holy Ghost!s ‘Static On The Wire’ EP has been out for a couple of weeks now, practically a lifetime in blog years. Still RAC‘s remix has only been out for a week, so I’m dangerously close to being relevant here.
Anyway it’s a lovely slice of synthetic disco pop that I reckon would sound perfect on our label, so come on lads, ditch those DFA jokers and come play with the big boys, you know it makes sense.
So what did you do last Saturday? Me, I was dancing the warm night away under the stars accompanied by a DJ set from Glasgow’s finest Twitch and Wilkes. Now if at this moment you’re thinking ‘what a massive wanker’ you would (a) be correct and (b) should take some solace in the fact that ten blissfull days without phone or email means I’m currently up to my eyeballs in shit.
Anyway, you may be pleased (indeed surprised) to find there is a point to all this rambling and that is that following Saturday nights reaffirmation of just what amazing taste they both have, today I found buried within the several million emails awaiting me one containing news of the latest release on Optimo Music, a reissue of ’The Spaces Between’ by Chris Carter (Throbbing Gristle).
Remastered, reduxed and available on vinyl (get it now from Juno) for the first time, you should already be sharpening your credit card but first let’s hear what Twitch has to say on the matter:
“The original release featured fifteen tracks. As I wanted to have a reasonably loud vinyl pressing, I have picked my favourite six to appear here (not an easy task to narrow it down).
In addition there is a bonus track “Climbing” which was recorded around the same time that was released by Coil’s Geoff Ruston on his “Men With Deadly Dreams” cassette in 1981.
One of the first ever recordings to use an 808 drum machine, it still sounds as if it is from tomorrow. In my opinion, these are some of the key recordings in the history of electronic music. They were made using very basic equipment at a time when there was no blueprint for what electronic music could and should be.
There is a beauty, an emotion and an imagination present here that is lacking in a lot of modern machine music. This music is as vital and wondrous today as it was four decades ago.”
Hear Hear! and indeed hear here as for your aural pleasure we can now present a track ‘Interloop’ taken from ‘The Spaces Between’.
Talking of Optimo, Twitch and Wilkes are playing in London this Friday (10th Sept) at Prins Thomas’ Ekstravaganza night at Corsica Studios, and will be playing all night long in room 2. An event that I think deserves the well worn but in this case thouroughly justified adjective ‘unmissable’.
Electronica, it’s the crazy new sound all the kids are going batshit for!
It’s been strange and, of course, somewhat gratifying to see so much good new electronic music this year but whilst much attention this year has, rightly, focused on the Gold Pandas and Walls of this world let us spare a thought for some of those grizzled veterans who kept the flame burning over the past few bleak years.
Still we probably need not be too sympathetic, judging by the alarmingly increased waist sizes of many of electronica’s ‘forgotten generation” they haven’t gone without a decent meal, but still it’s good to see the likes of Posthuman, (check out their excellent new album) getting some long overdue praise.
This October sees the overdue return of another maverick figure, the mercurial Cursor Miner, who returns with a new album, ‘Requires Attention’,(artwork by Slutty Fringe’s own Emma Cooke no less) on the always worth a punt Uncharted Audio label.
Preceding this no doubt epcoh defining release is a single ‘Luna’ (out Sept 20th) and it is the excellent video (directed by Jamie Bradshaw) for said single that you can find at the top of this post.
Finally whilst we’re on such matters, it might also be a good idea to pop your head into the new Uncharted Audio shop where you can grab a new 11 track compilation completley free, nice nice.
For the fifteenth mix we decided to take it back to the club via our favourite Los Angelean producers of thumping electronic bliss: Acid Girls.
Known to their mothers and lovers as Gregory Bowler and Jamie McNeil, Acid Girls first surfaced on the Slutty Fringe radar via their superlative blog of the same name before embarking on a fruitful post blog production career. Despite only gracing our ears with a mere clutch of original releases for the likes of Kitsune and iHeartComix, the duo have obliged us with some additional remixes of \\Health//, Appaloosa, Sisters Of Transistors and more that remain the staple of a Slutty Fringe Dj set.
There’s been a smattering of Acid Girl mixage on these here pages over the years and they were two lines from the top of the list marked “Who Shall We Get To Do A Slutty Fringe Mix?”.
It’s a brilliant mix that veers with delight through various different ends of the electronic spectrum. We managed to nail Gregory down to answer some silly questions about Electrowars, the LA club scene (surpringly similar to DJ Girl apparently) and the perfect Acid Girls event.
The kaleidoscopic swirls of psychedelic technoisms that run through Superpitcher’s “Rabbits In A Hurry” are an intriguing prelude to his new album Kilimanjaro which Cologne types Kompakt unleashed on the record buying public this week.
