This Is An Advertorial

28.04.11

So it’s another 4 day weekend here in the UK which means plenty of opportunities to party hard, recover and do it all again. Anyway here’s where you’ll find me this weekend should you, for some inexplicable reason, want to stand near me.

This Friday Modular’s Bag Raiders make their live UK debut at XOYO, this follows the release of their wonderful debut self titled album. Debut’s all round then.

It’s a great looking party as the Australian duo will be joined by Slutty Fringe faves In Flagranti, Stopmakingme, Riton and loads more (including my colleague Em who has smuggled himself onto the bill), get in, as they say.

We posted it a while ago but hey it fits so here’s the Stopmakingme refix of Bag Raiders last single Sunlight…

Having sweated the booze out of my system i’ll then be packing up some vinyl and heading North on Sunday to Islington and The Old Queen’s Head, where I’ll be drunkenly fumbling at the controls (7-8) alongside the likes of Riva Starr, Psychemagick, Stripes and fellow blog types Pelski.

Magic. It starts at 3 and goes on till 3, last man standing wins a prize*, probably a new liver or something i hope.

*not actually true.

All The Doors Open To The Same Exit

Having spent the extended weekend in the company of sunshine and the Shine 09 album it’s fair to say all those words of praise for the Finnish wearers of fancy knitwear is more than worthy.

And look more reason to crush on Cascine – lots of bulb enhanced fringe action going on in this video for the new Selebrities track with Usbeck’s almost horizontal effort most worthy of applause.

A Boasin Tone

21.04.11

The Sun is shining, and the weather is sweet here in Ladbroke Grove, I’ve got one of Felafel King’s finest for lunch so it’s probably time to dig out the red, gold and green string vest for our once a year dub/reggae post.

Long term readers of this hole will no doubt guess that the name Wrongtom is about to crop up and lo and behold here he is, as today’s strictly ital selection is an unreleased track from the sessions that made up the rather great Wrongtom vs. Pama Intl album.

Tom is playing at this week’s London International Ska Festival in Clapham alongside a host of legends.

Legalise it! Etc etc.

Words From Yaphet Kotto’s Tailor

“Theme From Yours Truly” is perhaps the finest example of what Beat Connection do and wins bonus points for having a Deep Burnt shuffle and a splendid title.

Buy the young Seattle based scamps reissued Surf Noir EP now from the Tender Age store and join me in catching them play at the Old Blue Last on Monday May 23.

Frees Are Good

19.04.11

People of Manchester this Easter weekend the much fancied Warehouse Project returns with 4 nights of electronic music mayhem, including one very special night celebrating 20 years of Carl Craig’s legendary Planet-E label.

Now I don’t know about you but here at Slutty Fringe when we think of the beautiful elegiac sounds of Detroit Techno, the closest mankind has ever come to recreating the music of the seraphim through crappy synthesizers we think cider, and not just any cider, but Kopparberg, truly the Underground Resistance of apple based alcoholic beverages.

Cementing this relationship, Sweden’s original, premium fruit cider are sponsoring this Easters series of parties and have given us a pair of tickets for this Saturday’s Planet-E bash, but seeing as like the Ravens of the Tower bad things were to happen if we left London we’ve decided to give away our tickets to one lucky reader.

So if you’d like to enjoy the cold, crisp, refreshing sound of Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Space DImension Controller, Tiger & Woods and more then answer the question below and we’ll pick one random winner tomorrow (Wednesday 20th) at midday.

Q) The Kopparberg Brewery was founded in 1945 by a small group of brewers. Detroit Techno was started in the early 80′s by a small group of producers, but by what name is this trio colloquially known as?

Answers on an email to sluttyfringe@gmail.com, the judges decision is final.

Kokocabana

18.04.11

Those of you who haven’t sand blasted your memories into oblivion subsisting on a diet of veterinary drugs the past few years may remember that for a while (well over 3 years) Tony and I were residents at Be’s Saturday night party at Proud.

Well after a short hiatus Be’s back (seeing as it’s Easter Sunday you could even say risen) only now they’ve moved up the road to the palatial confines of Koko.

Kicking things off they’ve pulled together an all-star lineup featuring US! and some others such as Friendly Fires (DJ Set), Man Like Me, Drums of Death, Stopmakingme and loads more, see the flyer above for the full line-up or check the website.

In the meantime here’s a brand new remix of CocknbullKid’s new single from one of our favourite producers, the aforementioned Stopmakingme whose own EP is out now on Bang Gang and well worth buying.

UPDATE! So basically I rather stupidly forgot to mention that we have a discount code that gets you cheap tickets for this party, just enter “beatslut” when buying from here and they’ll be just £8.

Faded Heart

Berghain resident Marcel Dettmann takes up the reins for the latest Oki Ni Friday Mix  with a bleaker than bleak selection of soundscapes and down trodden synth pop oddness.

Pop, Dip & Spin

Our new favourite example of overtly smudgey post punk gristle throbbers comes courtesy of Andy Blake and his twelve minute Industrial Revolution Dub of the next Detachments single “Audio Video”.

It’s just one of several excellently chosen remixes that will only see release on vinyl via the Pledgemusic initiative – can someone lend us a grand for the house party gig?

When I Found The Truth

11.04.11

Our buddies Loose Fit have started a new label charmingly called Music Hath Charms.

They take the helm for the inaugural release with the delightfully gliding sounds of “Bolsena” which comes propped up with remixes from Kompakt/Firm artistes Coma and Snoretex aka the towering musical presence that is Sam Allez Walls Willis.

It’s an auspicious debut release and we are excited to hear what else Music Hath Charms have up their sleeves.

Just as lovely is this rather beautiful Loose Fit cover version of Oni Ayhun’s brilliant OAR003 B track which is featured here in one of those blog premiere events that people cared so much about at one point.

Download: Oni Ayhun – OAR003 (Loose Fit Cover Version)

Bolsena is available now from Beatport and other digital vendors.

Endless Boogie

11.04.11

Fine Art Recordings and Basic Soul Unit are set for a return to the rarely used but collective house music brilliance of Herman soon with the sprawling early Chi town pump of “Rock Your Body”.

Thanks to the good people at Fine Art, you can hear it in full on the below skinny soundwave along with a remix from our favourite Ukrainian – no not Mila Kunis, but Vakula – a man who has a whole raft of great music on the horizon from Steve Reich remixes to the second Unthank release.

The release is also worth buying for the multitude of locked groove loops courtesy of Mr Basic Soul Unit himself – a pressing process that always leaves me flummoxed.

Out soon on a typically fine looking 10 inch record mate.

Tasty Tasty Murder

08.04.11

For the past couple of month’s Slutty Fringe’s south London axis has been living high on the hog with the arrival in the culinary wasteland that is New Cross of the #Meateasy above the boarded up Goldsmiths Tavern.

A pop-up burger bar is one way of describing it but having worked our way through the menu several times over we’d rather call it a small piece of paradise here on earth.

Sadly all good things come to an end and the Meateasy closes on April 16th so if you’ve yet to try the best burgers that you’ll ever taste you’re running out of time, and should that inexplicably not be reason enough to venture South of the river then this Saturday our friends from Radioolio are staging an afterhours takeover.

From 9pm they’ll be providing a late night soundtrack of 50s juke joints and once the burgerettes have finished feeding the famished and cleared away the tables the music and dancing will go on till the last man (or woman) is standing.

Be warned though it’s chaotic, insanely busy, cramped and you’ll probably spill burger juice all down yourself but hey that’s all part of the fun so roll up, get a ticket, order one (or three) of their amazing cocktails and soak up the atmosphere of a restaurant quite unlike any other you’ll have been to recently.

To get you in the mood why not check out the mixtape Radioolio did for us last year.

Currently quite obsessed with this remix of Phaoroahe Monche’s  “Simon Says” from Swedish artiste Kissey Asplund which turns the stone cold classic into something akin to Andre 3000 doing abstract techno.

If This Gonna Be That Kind Of Party

07.04.11

The only thing better than the music on the new EP from Berlin dwelling synth wave duo Sixth June is the fact Mannequin filled the promo pack with six thousand photos of the angular Serbian duo in various sultry poses.

Back For A Day is released on limited 12″ on May 28.
