You Blow My Mind

27.08.11

This Saturday, Forgive Me Lord For I Have Synth returns to the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch and to help them get the party started they’ve bought over from Belgium, Libertine Supersport’s resident DJ and Relish recording artists Mickey. Ahead of the party we traded words with the mononymous DJ.

Hello Mickey, It’s been a while since we’ve partied in Brussels, how’s the city’s clubbing scene these days?

The Clubs over here, especially in Brussels, are all handles by passionated music lovers, not directly business minded people. Something that you can strongly feel in the musical direction is the way all Belgian deejay’s play … Eclectic is the word  :  )

You’re playing at ‘FMLFIHS’ this weekend, Is this your first time playing in London, looking forward to it?

Clearly, i always wanted to go to London, and even more to play there. The City is a kind of “beacon” place for the music and i’m really happy to meet the FMLFIHS team and so for the Cosmonauts.

What can we expect from your set? Tell us a bit about your DJ style?

I never really know, Let’s say that i play what i wanna hear myself when i would be in the middle of the Dance floor  : )

Are there any particular tracks do you like to start and finish your set on?

Oh yes, for example this one, Cheaters – John Talabot’s Classic Vocal Refix, that Opens and Closes every night perfectly.

You’ve DJ’ed alongside some pretty big names at Libertine Supersport, who has been your favourite guest DJ so far, and who, dead or alive, would you most like to play with?

Definetely with Stephen aka The Magician aka the ex half of Aeroplane aka my friend … He’s  definitely one of the best Dj’s i know ,and it’s always a pleasure to play with him!

I love your track Farfelle, released on Headman’s Relish label, how did you hook up with Robi?

Thanks ! I’ve been hooked with Robi trough my Manager. He was looking for a good label to release the Farfalle E.P a threesome of melodicodrama tracks and Relish was the ideal hang out  : )

What have you got in the pipeline at the moment? Any new releases lined up?

I will tour the USA and Australia later this year. I just finished a track for the Relish Records Comp, out later this year. I did a remix for Punks Jump Up, planned for September. And next week i will finalize my next single featuring the singer of Monarchy, to get released Mid October on the brand new imprint “Smile Recordings”.

Ta muchly!

As The Night Breathes

25.08.11

Ali Renault is the long awaited debut album from, you guessed it, London underground electro icon Ali Renault.

Due out in the depths of the oncoming winter via the Cyber Dance imprint Renault oversees with aplomb, the album culls the best parts from the four corners of the electro stratosphere (Detroit, Den Haag, Rimini and London for the uninitiated) and moulds them into one heaving throb of album shaped delight.

Further intrigue is provided in the shape of vocal contributions from italo ledge Fred Ventura and pie making Hotel Hotel frontwoman Marika amidst the eight track set.

With the depths of winter some way off a sneak peak is offered in the shape of this upfront stream of the all too aptly titled “Smearing The Edges” which neatly transposes darkly dystopian arpeggiated splurges with upwards flourishes of utopian light over the ever present snap of drum pads.

Stream: Ali Renault – Smearing The Edges

If this tickles your pickle you might fancy the Cocadisco Bank Holiday bashment at Alibi this Sunday where Ali Renault will be joining Maria Minerva behind the bozak.

Hello Darkness My Old Friend

24.08.11

Black Strobe’s Arnaud Rebotini made a triumphant return earlier this year with his latest solo album ‘Someone Gave Me Religion‘, a dark, distorted and strangely beautiful set of ambient, industrial and techno heaters.

He has a new EP out in October but in the meantime he’s put up his cover of Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ on Soundcloud for the world to enjoy. If you’re in Glasgow this Friday, he’ll be playing at the Sub Club, we say go and check out his supreme pomp in all its glory!

The Darkness Of Lucidity

22.08.11

Given that Call Super consist of Matt Waites – who dun a mix for us – and JR Seaton – who has also featured prominently on these here pages – their new EP Staircase, released via fledgling LDN imprint 5 Easy Pieces, was always going to ring our bell.

We can recommend to others if one or more of the following describes you:

# you like stunted house grooves that lead down all kinds of strange paths within the duration of a track.

# the idea of eyeball screwing patterns adorning a record sleeve appeal massively.

# you are smart enough to be excited by the prospect of an Objekt remix.

For fans of paragraphs about music I wrote a much more detailed review further explaining why you should buy it here.

Fans of music that is binary and free can sample the excellence of Call Super via “Timora”.

Staircase by Call Super is out now on digital and 12″ formats.

I’ve Got Five On It

17.08.11

Starting to build up a bit of a buzz on these shores are Australian/South African quintet Clubfeet, whose ongoing video collaboration, Gold On Gold, with filmmaker Alex Goddard is supplying us with both plenty of fresh new flesh to gawp at beautiful visuals and sublime disco/indie/pop.

Hot off the back of the first video for ‘Edge of Extremes‘ we now have Episode number 2, this time Goddard providing the visual accompaniment to Clubfeet’s ‘Count Your Lovers’, and I think we can all say, job well done Mr Goddard, roll on Episode 3!

17.08.11

One time DC Recordings artiste Clause Four returns to his boogie centric alter ego Claws For? (geddit) on the forthcoming Colour Theory - out soon on 12″ and mp3 via his own Modern Soul imprint.

A little nugget of what to expect from it is posited in the shape of  “Yellow Orange” a delightful four minute chug through sunshine analogue vibes that is available for free download via the Claws Four? bandcamp.

Combination Drifter

16.08.11

What were you doing when you were sixteen?

I was mostly impressing a bunch of posh London girls with my gruff Northern accent (RIP) and bluffing my way into the indie clubs of Soho and Holloway.

Some people are more switched on to their future aspirations at such an age – for example the risibly named Skanky, a teenage Londoner whose debut release came out this week via Templar Sound – replete with a LOL BOYS remix who also are responsible for the above video.

Return Of The Thunder

15.08.11

Due to it’s vintage in an ADD age, Telepathe’s debut album still gets an airing on the reg round my way.

So the recent sonic emissions from the duo that sound dissapointly straight in their approach have been a bit, you know, stinky…. A swerve back towards our affections is offered via their remix of “The Breaks” from Planningtorock, which is definitely not a cover of the Kurtis Blow rap classic.

Across the four minutes that mark Telepathe’s debut on DFA, Busy and Melissa take the opportunity to fill the channels with as many cascading drum machine fills as humanly possible, whilst flushing the source material in a shuddering, crystalline sheen.

This is just one of four excellent remixes of “The Breaks” with Hannah Holland, Fall On Your Sword and The White Wizard Of DFA aka Gavin Russom filling the other spots on a release that is out there now in the internet ether.

Slutty Fringe Mix Series: Soft Metals

15.08.11

Slipping effortlessly into a groove which will no doubt stumble in the near future, we are proud to present a selection from Patricia Hall, the nonchalantly voiced frontwoman for Soft Metals. The Portland duo have just released their eponymous debut album on Captured Tracks, the Brooklyn label responsible for some noisy excellence in recent times.

Soft Metals, pitched as the synth pop romance between Patricia and Ian, has been soundtracking the summer months here at Slutty Fringe HQ, so we jumped at the chance to secure a mix from them.  The resulting 75 minute selection surpassed all expectations with Patricia delving through some of our favourite tracks from the Minimal Wave imprint of recent times before swerving through Chicago House, Dutch electro and Sheffield Bleep.

It goes along way to showcasing the influences that runthroughout the band’s ten track debut set, and if you would like a further dissection of the aforementioned we would recommend the indepth interview Patricia and Ian sat through Sherri Honan for FACT last month. In light of that discussion, we eschewed the opportunity to go over well trodden ground with Patricia and instead engaged her in some curveball questioning.

Weekend Warriors

15.08.11

The above photo is Not Not Fun’s Amanda Brown brandishing the vinyl edition of the new album from the perma scowling East European who makes fucking great music known as Maria Minerva.

Things that are great about London and Maria Minerva#1

Later this month the opportunity to see Maria Minerva play live then treat the basement of The Alibi to a selection of her favourite sugar rush pop music and disco trash within a smatering of days arrives courtesy of BleeD and Cocadisco.

View on Vimeo.

If you are yet to experience the smudged out excellence of Minerva this new hazy video for “Ruff Trade” my favourite track from Cabaret Cixous should get you hooked – it’s all motion sickness hooked on codeine rhythms as Maria gently coos away.

Never Revealing The Catch

10.08.11

Merok Records stake a further claim to our affections with this track “No Man” from the shadowy figure known simply as Deptford Goth who, despite several Twitter delivered accusations to the contrary, is definitely not one of the many musical alter egos of missing in action blog personality Pinglewood.

Download: Deptford Goth – No Man

“No Man” features on the forthcoming Youth II EP released on 12 inches of vinyl by Merok on October 17 those who wish to grace their turntables with it sooner can get in on the pre-order action here.
