Ice Cream On Concrete

31.10.11

For those of you interested in sumptuously presented vinyl only high concept albums released in limited quantities (and I realise the risibly named “blogosphere” might not be that place) a hearty recommendation to go seeking out the new Heatsick album is what occupies this space.

Having first come across the East Anglian living in Berlin via a quite brilliant 12″ on the Cocktail D’Amour imprint (a review for which can be read here) – yesterday afternoon was spent in the excellent Kristina Records listening to Intersex in an attempt to devil away a Blue Moon, whisky sour and red wine induced hangover that had outstayed it’s welcome.

The album is worth it alone for the thirteen minute casio jam that is “Ice Cream On Concrete”. A racy video for that track which expands on the concepts behind the album is available to watch here – be warned it’s not for the prudish.

Further aural enticement is available in the shape of the below stream of album track “Tertiary” and if all this takes your fancy a stroll to Kristina Records is your next point of action.

A Popular Drink

21.10.11

Tonight in scenes that will make this year’s earlier London riots look like a picnic in the park, about a billion (rough estimate) people will descend on Dalston to try, and fail, to get into the Justice album launch party at Visions, a venue that holds around 20 people at a push.

The rage from the self entitled masses of East London’s amateur film makers, photographers, bloggers and general scene faces, combined with the worst guest list blagging industry scum around (ie people like me) will be visible from space as they respond to this affront on their god given right to act bored and disinterested at any event.

We predict fun times.

Anyway should you be feeling more sensible then I’d suggest joining us on Saturday as we pick our way through the burnt out cars, abandoned leather jackets, American Apparel leggings and bandanas and head to Lemonade at The Nest, where SLUTTY FRINGE DJs (ie me on this occasion) will be spinning BIG TUNES alongside the likes of Burns and Loose Fit.

Eyes Down

20.10.11

HOT, BIG IN THE BLOGS, BUZZ BAND, etc etc Friends have a new song doing the rounds which, if you’re into insouciant sounding New York girls singing over almost too laid back to care but actually pretty good kind of disco, kind of post-punk music, is probably a good thing. Even better though the video, which I’ve yet to determine if it’s in fact a massive pisstake, provides the perfect excuse to get out those cards and play Hipster Bingo.

Soft Landings

19.10.11

Like an ether doused 20 tog duvet Bogdan‘s new song ‘My Head is Full of You’ swaddles us in a narcotic aureole, shielding us from the Kantian chill of reality.

Transmissions From Earth 2011

17.10.11

Yooouuutuuube is by far the funnest thing to happen to the internet since some tumblr dedicated to Jenny Lee Lindberg surfaced and is perhaps the best way to watch Beyonce’s Countdown.

Public Domain Icebergs

17.10.11

In from the barren wastelands of silence and dead air that is not being particularly bothered with this daily blogging brouhaha, we present this rather fine recording of Jokers Of The Scene recently treating customers at legendary LA vinyl shopping spot Amoeba to some of their favourite tracks.

The Prophet’s Song

13.10.11

We Have Band are back, and back in a big way. Yesterday they put this brand new track ‘Visionary‘ up on their Soundcloud page (if you ‘Like’ them on Facebook you can download it for free), it’s the first track to be aired from their as yet untitled 2nd album and basically sounds amazing.

To say that the new album is a quantum leap on from their already mighty fine debut, WHB, is a bit of an understatement. I’ve been lucky enough to have been living with it for a while now and it’s just perfect in every way, the music and the songwriting are better than ever and the interplay between the three vocals is without sounding totally fey, spellbinding.

Ok, that was pretty fey…

Now a massive caveat here, I am involved in promoting it so make of that what you will, but luckily I’m in a position to pick and choose a lot of the projects I work on and after hearing the album I fought tooth and nail to work on it. Anyway the album’s out in the new year, if you read this blog on the regular you’ll probably love it as much as I do, still in the meantime warp your ears around this and enjoy…

Fragment at Alibi

10.10.11

After last month’s “roaring success”, the Fragment boys are back at Dalston’s Alibi this October (Saturday 22nd) for take two. Residents James Fragment and Moman will be bringing back the tune caldron alongside special guests, Off Modern DJs and Gigolo Medina (one part of Wholemeal music).

Bittersweet Symphony

08.10.11

Italian producer Simone Fedi’s new single ‘Bitter Devotion‘ gets released on Monday on the wonderful Eskimo Recordings. As you’ll hear by watching the video above it’s a gorgeous balearic pop gem that even from my hungover position under the duvet staring at a slate grey wall of clouds is managing to inject some sunshine into my day.

Best of all it comes correct with a whole suite of remixes from Ewan Pearson and Welcome Stranger (Rub N Tug’s Thomas Bullock) who goes heavy into psychedelic dub territory. Stream both and download Pearson’s Bandapella remix below.

Behold The Future

07.10.11

This Friday Warp  Records OGs Plaid will be taking over Village Underground tonight for the launch of their new album ‘Scintilli’, they’re playing live which is exciting enough but when you consider that I’ll be warming up for them on the 1s and 2s then well it’s an overused term in clubland but i think this one really is truly UNMISSABLE.

Feet First

06.10.11

The superb Clubfeet are back with another EP and yet more mixes. This time it’s ‘Last Words‘ that is doing the rounds complete with a little spit and polish from the very bloggable likes of the C90s and RAC’s Andrew Maury (there’s also an incredible Dimitri from Paris one that sounds like The Clash’s Mustapha Dance but we can’t post that yet).

All in all more lovely stuff, and just the thing to take your mind off the fact that our much talked about Indian Summer heatwave appears to have finally done one.
