Staring Contests with John Lithgow

29.11.11

The good friends of the fringed slut known as Fragment have settled into a monthly groove at The Alibi, their new home in the land of infinite opportunities known as Dalston.

In a rare bout of sense, they were gracious enough to finally invite yours truly back to partake in the playing of music at their December party on the 10th. The night is already dipped in potential greatness thanks to the prospect of me lining up alongside former DJing partner Double A for the first time in many a year.

“He taught me all I know” goes the saying.

“That ain’t much” is the pantomine response.

Further reason to attend comes in the shape of a DJ set from best dressed chickens in town Double Denim, whilst the ragtag of residents known as Mad as Hell, Moman and birthday boy James Fragment will ensure that the minimum bar spend is met.

To mark their final party of 2011, I decided it was the perfect time put together a new mix of music both new and old, with tuff jams from the likes of John Talabot, Smuggles , Faltydl, Royalty, Kelis and SBTRKT amidst the 19 track 80 minute ride.

What Does Your Soul Look Like?

10.11.11

If i were an X Factor contestant there’s a fair chance that I would be describing today as all a bit ‘Emosh’, sadly when it comes to feelings i’m not even that articulate. Luckily like many a socially maladjusted young (ish) male I can express myself though other people’s music.

So basically today I’m feeling a bit like this new track from Essáy, a producer who has been occupying my thoughts a fair bit recently, make of that what you will.

Dem Bones

08.11.11

Having previously filed several emails about new Bad Life signings Dems in the optimistically titled ‘must get round to checking one day’ folder, they’ve finally spurred me into action by getting the ace Jean Nipon (who appears to have lost his ‘ai’) to remix their track ‘House’.

The resulting soundwave sees the band’s vocals reduced to a haunting ghost frequency, echoing over Nipon’s skeletal, twitching electronics. It never quite settles into a groove but still keeps you ‘locked on’ right to the end.

Please feel free to read that last paragraph in the most pompous voice you can imagine.

Lights and Music

More pretty pictures to gawp at courtesy of Clubfeet and Alex Goddard as their Gold on Gold project continues to OWN the internet, and look you can even download the Dimitri from Paris remix for free now (you should it’s great).

Crazy In Love

07.11.11

Crazy P‘s new album When We On is basically all kinds of lovely, melancholic disco/house that works as well sat on a sofa on an autumnal Sunday as it does in some after hours sweatbox.

Fresh from releasing that they’ve just announced a new single, Beatbox, that comes complete with remixes from PBR Streetgang, Debukas and Breach, all of which you can stream below ahead of its Dec 5th release.

For those of you who like hoovering up free MP3s there’s also a remix of album track Wecanonlybewhoweare by Keep Shelley In Athens, which if you like chugging reverb drenched amazing music will be right up your street.

Strollin Speechless

04.11.11

In my absence away from posting whatever rises to the surfaces on the murky waters of PR sludge I’ve slowly been cultivating a new hunger for vinyl records. If you’re one of those people who follows the Slutty Fringe twitter feed you might have seen me spout on about them amidst the 140 character diatribes.

How Are We Doing?, the recent ten inch from D’Marc Cantu, released via the MOS Deep offshoot of Delsin Records is most defintely amongst my current favourites.

Watch the above video and you will agree the forthcoming Floating Points release is worth purchasing for “Sais” alone but wait until you hear “Arp3″.

To Go Boldly

02.11.11

This week one of my favourite labels, Uncharted Audio, celebrates its 10th birthday. It’s unlikely you’ll find any massive features on this milestone in the likes of The Guardian but for a decade now label boss Kone-R has been busy releasing amazing records by artists such as Cursor Miner, Line and LJ Kruzer and for that anyone who cares about good music owes him at the very least a pat on the back and a pint.

Luckily you’ll have a chance to shout him a round this Saturday (Nov 5th) as Uncharted return to their regular haunt at Ginglik below Shepherds Bush Green, where Russ (as Kone-R is known to his mum) will be playing alongside the aforementioned Cursor Miner, Oliver Ho, Langer, The Council Flats of Kingsbury and Cyan341.

Cyan 341′s ‘Disconnected’, a haunting techno thumper if ever I heard one, is out now on Uncharted, check out the whole EP and a special exclusive remix we have to share with you below.

Download: Cyan341 – Disconnected (Discorrected by USRNM)

And if you like the sound of that remix and fancy more then you’re in luck as USRNM has an EP of his/hers/their own out soon on Photogram Recordings.

It Started With A Kiss

01.11.11

Having remixed both Princeton and lead singer Jesse Kivel’s other project Kisses, our superfriends :Kinema: have furthered strengthened the transatlantic special relationship by producing Kisses sublime new single, ‘Johnny & Mary’, which if it sounds familiar will be because it’s a cover of a Robert Palmer classic.

Stream below and then head over to Kisses’ website to download for free.

Stay Young Stay Foolish

01.11.11

In which New York’s Night Plane is tasked with tackling “Nuclear Seasons”, the somewhat ambiguous ode to decay by budding pop piece Charli XCX.

The Slutty Fringe favourite opts to strip away the original’s thrusting industrial pop in favour of thunderstorm ridden twilight house ripe with crisp percussion.

Download: Charli XCX – Nuclear Seasons (Night Plane Remix)

You can peep the original at CXCX site, whilst the single will be released along with a further remix from Hackman on November 21 via This Is Music.
