Off Modern Journal Launch

17.03.10

poster1logosinvertweb

On Thursday the 25th our good friends from South London, Off Modern celebrate the launch of their first full colour, risograph printed journal at London’s finest gallery the ICA.

The publication explores and illuminates the most exciting aspects of the ICA’s programme, and turns an inquisitive eye on the arts as a whole. It also showcases young creative talent and highlights emerging artists and creatives who are already shaping the cultural landscape and will definitely influence the way we see tomorrow.

Along with all the usual excitement Off Modern bring to the table, they’ll also be some deadly Dj sets from New Cross’s Nasty McQuaid, man about town Ronojoy Dam, collective Zineswap and the illusive Fervent Moon. So get down early, get yourself a limited edition publication and get your dance on.

For more information check out the event at the ICA website here or the Facebook event here.

No one to share a bargain ‘Meal for 2 for £10′ from M&S with?

Cancelled on by the friend of your flatmate with wonky hair who’s actually really annoying but you would anyway?

Well when you’ve got the choice of a bottle of red in front of (I don’t know what kids watch these days, Property Ladder or something) or a night out on the town with Luke Solomon, I know what I’d choose. He might be all over Geddes and blank you for Ryan Elliot and Tom Demac, but tbh they’re billed and you’re not so what can you expect. Two weeks late for Valentine’s, Mulletover’s “Anti-Valentine’s” is the perfect way to bring back all those memories of feeling pretty alone. Super-enticing from the way disgusting flyer in my honest opinion.

Saturday 27th Feb. 10pm-6am, Secret Most Likely Rather Romantic Location. Tickets £8-£14 from RA.

I’m A Cliche Too?

20.01.10

London party types Cliche step up a gear or two with CLICHÉ IS GOING TO THE ZOO, their first event of 2010, which takes places on the 29th Jan and touches on the ingenious equation of taking a Dalston warehouse and filling it with rave.

And calling it a Zoo.

Drop The Lime headlines.

Getting fooked on jaigermesiter and shaking a leg on stage whilst Drop The Lime Djed at Club Nasti in Barca ranked as one of my 2009 highlights so the prospect of Luca playing at some zoo themed warehouse space in Dalston should not go un-noted.

Legendary italo cyborg Alexander Robotnik, ping pong enthusiasts Joe & Will Ask?, GrlCore’s Isa Gin & Tonic and some Parisian dude called French Kriss are also on hand to bust out the zoo themed ravecore.

For an idea of what Drop The Lime might be playing here is a mix he did – tracklist after jump

Intergalactic Bubblegum

14.01.10

Brooklyn based Swiss filthy disco dukes In Flagranti are continuing where they left off last year with their joyous new glamrock meets fowl discopogo single Ex Ex Ex which is out next week and comes wrapped in typically smutty artwork.

Ex Ex Ex is also  backed with the mother of all remix packages.

*deep breath*

Riton, DJ Wool, Headman, Andy Butler, Golden Bug and Bottin all chip in with re-interpretations. Here’s the cheeky Golden Bug remix.

In Flagranti – Ex Ex Ex (Golden Bug Remix)

In celebration the duo will be making one of their increasingly frequent returns to London (this being a good thing) on February 8th with a ‘live’ performance at Farringdon record shop/cafe/live venue/speed dating spot/budding cinema Pure Groove.

After shared the bill with them at everyones favourite club underneath a furniture shop in Dalston, it’s fair to say In Flagranti live (70s porn spliced and diced onto a projector screen whilst Sasha & Alex twiddle knobs) is best witnessed in small sweaty confines – making Pure Groove a near ideal location for your Tuesday evening disco fix.

Facebook yourself hurrrr.

The End Of A Decade

30.12.09

NYEPOSTER

As we emerge from the wreckage of Christmas there’s just a couple more parties to look forward to before we all troop off back to work and resume our lives of relentless soul destroying wage slavery.

First up it’s the big one, NYE, and Tony and I will be closing off the night in the main room at 93 Feet East. For the price of admission you’ll also get DJ sets from the likes of Doves, Wild Beasts, Greco Roman Soundsystem and the Superfilth Residents, Arrow!!!, Oli  D.A.B & Robin, get your tickets now to avoid disappointment.

be_web400w_jan10

Then in an effort to stave off the inevitable heart wrenching post NYE depression, Be have done the correct thing and have booked the best new pop band in the world :Kinema: to spread a little sunshine over Camden this Saturday. And if that isn’t reason enough to brave the cold then Tony and I will again be manning the decks, sorted!

Cold Gettin’ Dummy

04.12.09

1905-1906_Russian_Underground_Press_02

There are many reasons to love Dummy, not least that when they’re not interviewing and reviewing all the BRIGHT YOUNG NEXT BIG THINGS and releasing brilliant records by The Golden Filter, they allow idiots like myself to write about Freddie Mercury in great detail.

Anyhoo, it’s Friday and December and that inevitably means Xmas party time, and thankfully Dummy have been smart enough to get their’s out the way before the inevitable booze fatique kicks in around week two.

So if you’re in London tonight put on your glad rags and head up/down/laterally to Dalston and everyone’s favourite furniture shop basement/rave cave Bardens Boudoir. For the price of admission you get to see 2 bands, Everything Everything and Fiction and a whole load of DJs who I’m sure will be just swell.

Tickets seem to be available in advance from here, I’d assume you’ll still be able to just rock up and get in, errr though don’t take my word for it…

Luckily we’ve featued Everything Everything a couple of times now which means I can just re-up those tracks and get on with the important business of eating my lunch. Hurrah.

Unlucky For Some 13.11.09

03.12.09

IMG_2606

Some pictures from the Unlucky For Some party at Corsica Studios a couple of weeks back. Slutty Fringe were present in full effect supplying weird and wonderful afro-psyche-metal-disco interludes in between the likes of The Emperor Machine, The Present, Higamos Hogamos and The Oscillation.

I dont think I’ve ever got to play so many strange records that I’ve never been able to play in a club before, including the full 20 minutes of Niagara’s Sangandongo, much aceness.

Tom Medwell followed us down the rabbit hole with his trusty camera.

Off Modern 10

25.11.09

Off Modern 10

Thorough family friends Off Modern have reached round 10 in party history and this time round they’ve recruited up the Plugs, Acres Acres, Jam City, and Joe Howden for a party spectacular. Along with all of that there’s the usual Off Modern residents Tomfoolery vs Nasty McQuaid and some live art from Hounds of Hate.

Get down south, get your drunk on and try and hide from the Vice paparazzi (or not).

For more information check out their little Facebook event page here, or their website here.

Get Your Whistle Wet

18.11.09

For the most contemporary example of what happens when visual media collides with musical expression look no further than Sport Hit Paradise.

Up and coming illustration talent Elizabeth Arkhipoff asked a clutch of excellent musicians such as Munk, Discodeine, In Flagranti and Gavin Russom to record a track for her imaginary band Sport Hit Paradise, providing the general direction as well as song title and also came up with some original art to accompany each track.

This art will be shown at Arkhipoff’s forthcoming exhibit at Paris art space 12 Mail from December through to February next year and some 300 copies of the musical results have been pressed up on CD to give away.

The nice people at D*I*R*T*Y / 12 Mail have cocked a snoot at the elitist norm of high art though, and offered all tracks to spread across the internet.

Some are better than others and you’ll find the better ones here. Full details of gallery run after the drop.
