Interviews

Greg Wilson Interview

24.01.07

revox

Greg Wilson, who is considered something of a legend at Slutty Fringe, got in touch recently and agreed to answer some questions – which was reet nice (and made me squeal with joy like a school girl) Enjoy

SF: Firstly Greg, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for Slutty Fringe. You first came to prominence back in the early 80s with residencies at Wigan Pier and Legend in Manchester, which DJs inspired you to get involved in playing records in clubs?
GW: I wasn’t so much inspired by individual DJ’s, but by the fact that I grew up living above a pub, which had 2 functions rooms, where parties and wedding receptions were held pretty much every weekend. It was the DJ’s who came with their mobile discos that made a collective impression on me. I lived there between the ages of 6 and 13, so I absorbed a lot of music in this way, sitting behind the bar at night with my mum, and even later, when I’d gone to bed and could still feel the beats coming up through the floorboards (this is how I believe I acquired my sense of rhythm).

Then, I met a school friend, Derek Kelsey, who built his own mobile disco aged only 11 (2 old turntables in a wooden draw with a switch between deck 1 and 2). Derek became a close friend, and still is, so I suppose that if anyone was an inspiration, it was him.

On The Brink Recordings

28.11.06

on the brink

2006 has seen the wonky house stylings of the whole Dubsided/Counterfeet/Speaker Punks fam come to the fore. People want a crazy ass remix to give their band some buff hype they call up Dave Taylor and let him rip a new shit hole in their track (refixes of Spank Rock and Bugz In The Attic are among my favourite this year)

Next year will see a new name to look out for in the shape of On The Brink Recordings with upcoming releases from Hi Jack and SF favourites The Crookers. Slutty Fringe was lucky enough to get hold of label boss Craig Walsh and discuss what exciting things On The Brink has up its sleeve over the next few months.

Slutty Fringe: On The Brink has only recently been set up – How did you come about starting your own label and what are your plans for it?

Craig Walsh: I only physically started the label this year, out of boredom really. I’ve had the idea in my head for years, but was always putting it off.

After the HiJack EP is out on 18th december, February will see an EP by The Crookers, which will feature a very special Trevor Loveys remix.

From then on, I’m aiming to release 1 EP every 2 months. I’ve got some more dope shit coming from The Crookers, HiJack are working on new material, there is a bootleg EP coming out soon as well. I’ve got a few demos to go through, one in particular from a guy in brighton, who has done a wicked jump up version of ‘jesus walks’ by kanye west. Also, there is a certain kiss fm dj, who plays the whole baltimore club ting, who may be doing a remix !!!

Words from the Wrong ‘un

15.09.06

wrongtom.jpg

mr wrongtom just delivered a nicenice remix of Robots In Disguise to slutty fringe and stopped long enough to answer a few questions – check it

You seem quite prolific on the remix front at the moment, can you reveal any future relicks that will see the light of day shortly?

There’s loads in the pipeline, i’m just finishing off an uptempo one for a band called legs on sale from LA, there’s a couple more dubbed out versions i’ve done with the stoneleigh mountain rockers for the ripps on catskills and jay bharadia on lumenessence, plus i’ve done a couple of versions of an old bob n marcia song which’ll hopefully come out on trojan next year. There’s also some talk of satanic crunk with a remix of geoff barrow’s new signings, blood island raiders.

Oh No Not Him Interview

13.09.06

OhNoNotHim

Oh Not Not Him took some time off recording his debut album to kindly answer some questions for Slutty Fringe

Where does your name originate from?

My friends mum used to say it when I went round to his house. She was a bit uptight but I kind of fancied her as well. It sort of stuck in my head, then I used it in a song and thought it would be a good moniker.

What is the title of your debut lp and what can we expect?

Its called Dumb N Bass and you can pretty much expect that. Dumb lyrics and bass heavy beats. There are songs about getting your trainers knicked and having to walk home barefoot in the rain , annnoying people on the bus by singing along to your walkman, bizarre sexual encounters, celebrity culture, losing your life and mind to computer games, oh and of course my friends mum.
