Much as I love a bit of faux punk outrage and sub-electroclash nonsense from well brought up kids, every now and then I find myself yearning for something a little less synthetic and bleeding edge that isn’t afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve.
The last week or so the new Prince Language mix of LCD’s ‘Part 1′ has been filling this role admirably. Probably my favourite track of the past couple of years, I was a little unsure as to how you could improve on perfection, but somehow P Lingo has managed to at least equal the original in all its big gospel disco greatness.
It’s like he’s taken something as un-fucking-touchably great as the McRib, the kind of thing that only comes around once in a blue moon and without messing with the vision and greatness of the original he’s somehow gone and added some extra flavour. It’s a McRib with Bacon that’s what this is.
Anyway after all that you’ll probably be expecting the hook up… and I’m sorry but you’re going to be dissapointed. This ones being kept under wraps for the mean time but what you can feast on is this lovely extended edit by Prins Thomas of ‘This Sweet Love’ by Moshi Moshi’s latest signing James Yuill.
If any track could be said to wear it’s heart on it’s sleeve it’s this, and a big messy heart it is too, just the kind of thing to make grown men blub warm salty tears into their beards when they think no one is looking. The single is out on the 14th with remixes from the likes of We Have Band and Drums Of Death, meanwhile if you head over to James’ own blog you’ll find a couple of extra mixes to grab at your leisure.
One of my most treasured possessions is a battered VHS copy of Queen’s Live In Budapest concert, recorded in ’86, it showed the band and their flamboyant lead singer at the heights of their power. For a textbook lesson in how to hold a couple of hundred thousand people in the palm of your hand it takes some beating and as an impressionable youth I would stand in front of the TV screen aping Mercury’s every move, soaking up his style like a little pre-pubescent gay sponge.
It made quite an impression and I credit my early obsession with the band and Farokh Pluto Bulsara with turning me into the sordid man I am today. Now I never got to see the band live but I glimpsed an echo of Mercury last Saturday when I caught Lex Record‘s latest signings Heartbreak doing their thing at Proud. One of the best shows I’ve seen in recent months, Heartbreak may trade in dark, electro pop and italo disco rather than stadium pomp rock but the band delivered their songs with the conviction and arrogant swagger of superstars and in Sebastian Muravchix possess a frontman worthy of the title.
Like all great acts (and some truly terrible ones) in their minds they already are legends and the world is just playing catch up. Their debut album Lies is out at the end of this month and should do a good job in speeding up the process, in the mean time download their RA podcast, grab the MP3s below and catch them live wherever you can, you won’t regret it.
Oh and since we’re legally obliged to swoon over her at least once a week, here’s a rather nice piano version of Heartbreak’s ‘We’re Back’ as performed by Little Boots… Es Muy Dramatico!
Whilst the gents from Blamma!Blamma! have been holed up in the studio making some head worrying music for wee Little Boots to sing over, a talented young director in the making called James Cook decided to make a video for their famous on the internet & club soundsystems electro behemoth Carry Me Home.
Labels wishing to furnish young James with big budgets for prospective pop promos should direct their pleas here.

Next Roots Manuva single Again & Again out August 25th with Shy FX on the buttons for this track – keep your left eye out for the album dropping 1st September
There is plenty of love for Late of The Pier round here – check the new video for live favourite Focker which is just crazy - be on the lookout for the re/release of Space & The Woods backed with Focker in a couple of weeks with some champions league remixes from the dons Switch and Erol Alkan – one of which I may have heard at the Deadly Rhythm Fluokeeeds hoedown on Friday night but that’s alll a bit hazy….
Young producer/rapper Goldielocks has been bubbling under for the best part of twelve months now, threatening to unleash her rowdy styles on the general unwashed. Good news people – April 7th sees the release of Double A side single Wasteman and Neek Chic on digital and vinyl formats through Locked On Records.
The uninitiated can glimspe a peep of what to expect with the video for Wasteman below.
Given that Goldielocks has been known to press buttons in her studio for the likes of Miss Odd Kidd, Tinchy Stryder and good gosh Kate Nash, it’s entirely possible that big things happen for her very soon
New video for forthcoming single Go For Blue by Pepe Deluxe – excellent visual companion to a heavy track – it’s out on Monday on splendid Brighton imprint Catskills backed with remixes by Lost Idol, Viva Voce and a tuff tuff drum drum effort from the Optimo boys – you can grab the Viva Voce remix from the Pepe Deluxe Last FM page here
Belgium has played an important part in club music over recent times – FACT! The Dewaele brothers antics as both Soulwax and 2ManyDJs have had hips shaking for some time and The Glimmers DJ sets have brought an ecleticism to clubbing akin to what the Optimo peeps up in Glasgow are renowned for (you must check the new Glimmers remixes of Shocking Pinks, the latest DFA signing)
There’s even a vibrant dubstep scene in Brussels right now- check the new Substance compilation on Aeclectrick Records if you like a bit of the half time wubwub.
Following in the footsteps of both Soulwax and The Glimmers, are rising act The Subs. Comprising of Starski and Tonic (both excellent DJs in their spare time and former residents at Belgian clubbing institutions Culture Club and Dirty Dancing) and multi instrumentalist Papillion from dirty electrorockers Foxylane.
They’ve been bubbling under since 2005, with their track You Make Me Spill featuring on the Dirty Dancing – Histoire D’Amour comp in 2006 and Substracktion getting put out on Dr Lektroluv’s imprint and have provided remixes for Mason among others.
Here’s where it get’s good, they’ve got a new track, somewhat provocatively entitled Fuck That Shit which is just immense. A twisted dirty bit of house music that starts off like that Timo Maas remix of Azzido Da Bass from all that time ago (haha remember that shit??) and contains several absolutely nasty breakdowns and some rather funny lyrical repitition – check it!
So last week all my plans were put to one side as my body decided on Tuesday evening it would be quite nice to go for a slow dance with some food poisoning (which I finally came to the conclusion had to be the fault of a hotdog vendor outside Chalk). Right about the time I was getting ready to hit the Dazed EdBanger party – lovely. Special thanks go to my friend Stas who sent me a rather smug text message at 8am the next morning as he was getting back from said party. Thanks.
Anyway, Ed Banger label boss and, according to some, Jesus lookalike Busy P dropped his Rainbow Man EP last week and it’s rather tasty. The title track is an ode to the APT in New York (though maybe Extortionate Drinks Prices is a more accurate title, not very catchy though is it?) Chop Suey was originally released on Arcade Mode ages ago and is some hot ghettotech with a decidely french flavour. My favourite track, however, is Pedro’s remix of What’s Your Name Again? by Fancy which cuts up and distorts the guitar sample brilliantly and goes all over the place.
I got invited to check Robyn (definitely the most interesting hair in music right now) play at Proud in Camden on Thursday, but wanted to catch the No Hopers perform at YoYo and ended up doing neither! (I should be getting a mixtape from the No Hopers, so more on them soon)
Judging by the forthcoming single, Konichiwa Bitches, Robyn is gonna be big in 2007, Menta, Trentemoller and Oscar The Punk on remix duties and a rather splendid video to boot. the Trentemoller mix sounds like he’s been listening to the B52s and lots of jump up drum and bass recently – which is a very good thing
Konichiwa Bitches is released on the 26th of March – i’m pretty sure it will be available on all formats from everywhere.
And on Friday, I was going to venture into New Rave Cross to catch all girl in 70′s style PE garms trio The Duloks perform then head up to Brixxton to catch Freestyle Records’Shepdog play the cold heat with the Keepup! kids. Instead I spent it on the sofa, rubbing my tummy, watching CSI repeats on Five US and feeling sorry for myself.
Come Saturday, I was much better, and after spending lots of money on new vinyl I headed up to the rather cosy part of North West London that is Kilburn to catch The Chap perform at The Luminaire.
Line opened up for the evening with some nice electropop sounds that contained a generous amount of deliberate wonk and no accidental laptop dropping, and Capitol K made quite an impression on me as I don’t really know much about their previous work.
The Chap were really on point though. They are a band with a reputation for putting on amazing live performances and Saturday was no different. Working through tracks from their two albums and some hot new material that got me very excited, they had the crowd dancing from the off and had me in stitches with their silly vogue routines. The drummer is supertight on the sticks as well.
There was some A & R heat in the crowd so you might be seeing them surface with a new album on a hot sauce label in the near future. My favourite tracks from their performance were Baby I’m Hurting and Clissold Park. You really should go out and buy their albums, befriend them on Myspace and go check out one of their gigs. Splendid stuff
Unfortunately I had to duck out before the end of their performance to catch the tube to Old St to play at Suicide Dogz‘ night at the 333. I managed to catch the end of Swallow’s set (Fuck My Boyfriend is a great pop track) and TheCocknBullKid did a great short wee set that had the crowd moving hips.
Roy Teens played a tuff set of tracks that went from 90′s rave anthems to hiphop bangers and several places inbetween and I hit the crowd with an hour and a bit of low end house, baltimore and ed banger goodness. Speshul!
Oh yes, before the food poisoning took over I went to the ICA to see Patrick Wolf last Monday. I only got into this kid a few months back after being asked to write about him for Kultureflash and having no real idea who he was decided to investigate. I picked up Lycanthropy, his debut album and was hooked on the dramatic instrumental flourishes and moody electronic production that is absent from most pop music these days.
His new album, The Magic Position, is a decidely more upbeat proposition and this mood was reflected in a excellent performance at the ICA. Taking to the stage looking like a oversized boyscout and backed up by an extremely impressive band of musicians, Wolf treated the audience to the new material, switching between playing a piano and a violin.
My favourite moment was the rendition of Accident & Emergency that sounded like it had been given a dirty grime relick on the ICA Soundsystem. He even did a track on the encore with support act Bishi (who I missed play earlier unfortuntely) I think this album will see Wolf break through and get the attention his talent undoubtedly deserves.
I will give out some prizes (Crookers mixtape, Modular Records Mix plus more) to the first person to correctly guess the location where this video was shot – send entries to tony.poland@gmail.com with “video competition” in the header.
I’ve been in love with this song for a few months now, it’s just the best piece of music I have heard for quite some time, get goosebumps and shit when I listen it.
Catskills have done the right thing and released it as a single this week – available on cd, 7inch and download preceding their second album, Ghost Is Not Real which drops at the end of this month. It’s worth getting the album for the full 7 and a bit minutes of this track.
Well I was planning on writing about how much of a jolly good time I had at the Modular End Of Year Party but unfortunately a combination of me drinking lots of rum and a disagreement, over something I have no recollection of, with one of the Canvas security team meant I was there for only 30 minutes. I did get to see some of New Young Pony Club’s set and they were quite special (You can see pictures of the event here)
Anyway, Modular aren’t ones to rest on their laurels and they’ve got plenty of exciting music lined up for 2007 – A New Young Pony Club longplayer, the much anticipated (and delayed) debut from MSTRKRFT, new material from the Avalanches and Cut Copy and quite excitingly some new stuff from The Bumblebeez!!
The Bumblebeez caused a bit of a stir a few years back with the release of the excellent (and quite rare) White Printz EP on Wichita (I remember the sorely missed Jockey Slut touting them as the Next Big Thing) they released a further EP on Wichita and were then snaffled up by Modular who put out the album excellent Printz in 2004. And then The Bumblebeez kinda went off the radar.
But now they are back! On Monday, Black Dirt is released on veeee veeee limited 7″ vinyl and is some more infectious scuzzhop sounds and they’ve put together a funny video to celebrte this fact! Tiger Suits are splendid no matter what anyone says!
I’ve also stuck up a couple of tracks of theirs which I think are great!
